PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team enjoyed another dominant performance on Saturday, defeating Baruch College 6-0 in the Northwestern Mutual Cardinal Classic Finale. The Cards had six different goal scorers, led by senior midfielder
John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) who tallied a goal and an assist.
Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) recorded the game's opening goal and the game-winner, as
Bradyn Primus (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen),
Xavier Kamba (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack),
Ryan Shalvey (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee), and
Colter Cheney-Seymour (Saranac Lake, N.Y./Northwood School) each added goals for the Cards.
Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and
Matthew D'Ippolito (Baldwin Place, N.Y./Somers) combined to shut out the Bearcats, with Healy earning his second win of the season.
The Cardinals finished their weekend outscoring two conference champions and NCAA Tournament teams from last season 11-0, sweeping their slate of Northwestern Mutual Cardinal Classic games. In the win on Saturday, the Cardinals earned nine corners and tallied 18 shots, while Baruch had just one corner kick, three shots, and one shot on goal.
Plattsburgh moves to 2-0 with the win and heads to UMass Boston for a road match on Saturday, Sept. 7 for their next contest. Baruch falls to 0-2 and plays at St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on Saturday, Sept. 7 in the next game on their 2024 slate of games.
The scoring opened for Plattsburgh at the 14:53 mark of action, as Hayes was pulled down attempting a shot inside the box to force a whistle and call for a penalty kick. Coughlan, who made a penalty kick yesterday and was 5-5 on his career entering the game, was selected to take the kick and connected for his second goal of the season.
Baruch nearly equalized in the 17
th minute shortly after, but Coughlan was able to stop a deflected shot off of Healy's hands from crossing the line to keep the Cardinals in front.
The 1-0 lead continued to hold and the Cardinals were able to extend as they earned a corner kick in the 34
th minute. A Coughlan kick from the corner was pinballed from three heads as both Hayes and
Connor Howe (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) batted the ball toward the goal before Primus finished with his first career goal.
Plattsburgh picked up their final goal of the first half from Hayes, as he was able to knock in his second goal of the season with a long strike from just outside the top of the box.
Santiago Vargas (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) was able to find Hayes with space in the middle of the field, where the senior struck a low shot past the Bearcat goalie.
The second half saw more of the same for the Cardinal offense, as Kamba tallied his second goal of the 2024 season with a 64th-minute score off an assist from
Thomas O'Neill (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa).
With the 4-0 lead, the Cardinals were able to get the regular off the field and the second unit for Plattsburgh responded with the same strong effort, adding two more goals late into the action.
Shalvey tallied his first career goal, as
Owen Langer (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) found his fellow first-year on a great play in transition, allowing for the first assist of Langer's career and the first goal of Shalvey's career.
The final goal of the night came off Plattsburgh's ninth and final corner, as
Michael Rodriguez (Jefferson Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) took the kick and found Cheney-Seymour for the sixth goal of the game. The sixth goal of the night marks the most goals in a game for Plattsburgh since an 8-0 win over Alfred on Sept. 4, 2021, where
Dylan Shalvey '24, Ryan's older brother, tallied a hat trick. Coughlan also scored in the game as well for the Cards.
Jon Legasa took the loss in net for Baruch, making three saves in 90 minutes, while Arman Celebi had two of the team's three shots and the only shot on goal.
