GENEVA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team opened up their season at No. 20 William Smith, falling to the Herons 8-0 in Geneva, New York. The host had four goals in each half as they picked up their first win of the season in the opening game of the 2024 Stand On Their Shoulders Invitational.
William Smith is currently ranked at No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
Plattsburgh State falls to 0-1 with the loss and will play No. 24 TCNJ at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31. The Herons move to 1-0 and take on Washington and Lee on Saturday, Aug. 31 as well.
The Cardinals were unable to slow down the Heron offense throughout the day, as William Smith scored just 1:18 into the game and led 4-0 at the 23:06 mark. After holding them scoreless for over 25 minutes, including into the beginning of the second half, the Herons added two goals at the 50:50 mark and at 58:22 to go up 6-0. Two more goals after the 80
th minute put the score at the final of 8-0.
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) played all 90 minutes, making six saves and taking the loss. Kirsten Nelson earned the win for William Smith, making one save in over 65 minutes.

Bailee Lafountain (Mooers Forks, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton),
Maria Mauro (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge), and
Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) each registered a shot on goal.
