GENEVA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team lost on the road, taking on No. 24 The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in a neutral match hosted by William Smith. The Cardinals fell 5-1 to the Lions in the final of four games in the 2024 Stand On Their Shoulders Invitational, as TCNJ also defeated Washington and Lee in the invite.
TCNJ is ranked No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) poll.
Hannah Meyers (Peru, N.Y./Peru) scored the lone goal of the game for Plattsburgh, tallying the first score of the year for the Cardinals and the first of her collegiate career. Senior
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) took the loss in goal but made a career-high 12 saves against a potent Lions offense.
Plattsburgh moves to 0-2 with the loss and next plays on Wednesday, Sept. 4 when they travel to Castleton for a 7 p.m. matchup. TCNJ improves to 2-0 on the young year and travels to Penn State Harrisburg for their next match on Saturday, Sept. 7.
The Lions were able to jump out to an early lead, scoring in the ninth and 17
th minutes of action, taking a quick 2-0 lead. The Cardinals were able to cut into the deficit at the 26:17 mark when Meyers collected the first goal of her career. The 2-1 score held into halftime, with TCNJ holding a 14-3 advantage on shots.
Despite having some momentum heading into the second half, the Cardinals could not stop a strong Lions' attack, as they scored a quick second-half goal at the 47:49 mark and soon after at 55:36. A goal at 72:47 capped the scoring for TCNJ as they left Geneva with the 5-1 win, their second of the weekend.
Cassidy DiSabato led the offensive charge for the Lions with a goal and an assist, while Ellen Williams earned the win in goal with two saves.
