PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After one quarter of play the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team was tied with the Oneonta Red Dragons but a seven-goal outburst in the second for the Red Dragons powered them to a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win as the Cardinals fell 16-4.
Senior midfielder
Cam Morin (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) led the Cardinal offense with two goals.
Fynn Whitlock (Middlebury, Vt. / Middlebury Union) and
Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) tacked on one goal each while Whitlock also collected three ground balls and two caused turnovers and Woods one ground ball. Senior attacker
John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) led the team in assists with two and ground balls with four while sophomore midfielder
Tim Keenan (Poughquag, N.Y. / Arlington) added an assist as well.
For the Red Dragons, Eric Nicholson led the team in points with eight from eight assists. Jamie O'Neil led the team in goals with five.
The Red Dragons outshot the Cardinals 64-28 and had a 44-25 advantage in ground balls. The Red Dragons won the faceoff battle 19-5. On extra man-up opportunities the Cardinals were 1-3 while the Red Dragons were 3-8. On clear attempts the Cardinals were 26-34 and the Red Dragons 21-23.
Plattsburgh moves to 2-7 overall (0-2 SUNYAC) and next hosts Oswego St. on Saturday, Apr 13 with the opening faceoff dropping at 1 pm. The Red Dragons move to 5-5 overall (1-2 SUNYAC) and next hosts Brockport on Saturday, Apr 13 with the opening faceoff dropping at 3 pm.
Vincent Tirino opened the first with a goal for the Red Dragons at the 11:41 mark. The Cardinals didn't respond until the 5:07 mark when they had a golden opportunity after a Red Dragon penalty and they cashed in on that extra man-up opportunity with a goal from Morin assisted by Keenan and tied the score at 1. The score held as neither team got another goal in the quarter.
Three straight goals from O'Neil powered a 7-0 run for the Red Dragons as they got out to an 8-1 lead. Whitlock broke up the run and scored the last goal of the quarter at the 2:01 mark as the Cardinals went into halftime down 8-2.
Tirino started the third with another goal at the 11:59 mark. Nearly four minutes later Morin notched his second goal of the game off the pass from Eiseman and made the score 9-3 Red Dragons. The Red Dragons responded with three straight goals before Woods got on the board off an Eiseman pass and made the score 12-4 Red Dragons. Aidan Greene tacked on a late goal with less than five seconds in the third and made the score 13-4 Red Dragons at the end of the third.
The Red Dragons held the Cardinals scoreless in the fourth quarter as they added three insurance goals and the Cardinals fell 16-4.
Senior goalie
Dan Clements (Putnam Valley, N.Y. / Putnam Valley) made 19 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh falling just short of his career-high 20 saves he set against Oneonta last year on Apr 15. Senior goalie Harrison Boukas made nine saves in the win for Oneonta.
