Softball Falls to Geneseo in SUNYAC Doubleheader Action in Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team held tough against the three-time defending conference champion Geneseo Knights on Friday but fell in both ends of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader. The Cards were able to collect nine hits in each game, putting forth a strong offensive effort against a strong pitching staff.

Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) collected five hits across both games, driving in two runs and scoring twice, and Julia Golino (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) had three hits in the doubleheader, driving in a team-high three runs. Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) had her fourth straight seven-inning complete game, allowing just three earned runs and striking out six in game one.

Plattsburgh State falls to 7-21 (1-11 SUNYAC) and will take on Brockport tomorrow, April 27, beginning at noon. The team will honor five seniors between the games tomorrow in Dolly Garguilo (Monroe, N.Y./Washingtonville), Golino, Dimitra Mouhteros (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), Claire Palmer (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), and Kaitlin Smith (New Windsor, N.Y./Washingtonville).

Game One: Geneseo 4, Plattsburgh 2

Ormerod's strong outing was not enough for the Cards in game one, as Kaitlyn Schmitz won the pitcher's duel allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven.

Isaacs finished game one 3-4 with two doubles, also scoring a run, while Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) was 2-3 on the day. Mouhteros picked up the team's only RBI, driving in Isaacs with a fielder's choice.

Plattsburgh took the early lead in game one of the SUNYAC doubleheader in the bottom of the second, with a walk from Michelle DeFina (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and a two-out single from Deo putting runners on the corners. A hard groundball to first was mishandled in the following at-bat, allowing DeFina to score and give the Cards a 1-0 lead.

In the subsequent half-inning, an RBI groundout tied the game for Geneseo, and they took the lead in the fourth on another RBI groundout. A triple from Brooke Fraas in the fifth put the Knights up to 4-1 and she came around to score later in the frame on a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cards threatened with two runners on with one out but were unable to score, as the same occurred in the sixth, as the tying run reached the plate in the final three innings for Plattsburgh.

The seventh inning saw Plattsburgh use an Isaacs double, a Golino single, and then a fielder's choice from Mouhteros to go down 4-2 with two outs in the inning. With the tying run at the plate, Schmitz picked up her biggest strikeout of the day, ending the game and giving the Knights the win.

Fraas had two RBI for Geneseo while Rebecca Schwartz and Hannah Olejnicza each were 2-3.

Game Two: Geneseo 13, Plattsburgh 6

In game two, the bats came alive for both teams, with the seven-run first inning for Geneseo being the difference as they completed the doubleheader and season sweep over Plattsburgh.

Golino drove in three runs with two doubles in game two, while Isaacs drove in two runs with two hits. Palmer had two hits and two runs scored in game two, while Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was 1-3 with two runs scored, a double, and a walk. Carly Gemmett (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) took the loss, allowing six earned runs, while Calli Fitzwater (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) threw 6.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs.

Five hits for the Knights in the first inning turned into seven runs as Geneseo took a commanding 7-0 lead before Plattsburgh could even bat. The Cards were able to respond, as Golino doubled home Noll, who reached on a one-out walk.

After two 1-2-3 innings from Fitzwater in the second and third, Palmer singled to left with one out, stole second, and came around to score on an Isaacs single to left.

Geneseo added two runs in the fourth and then a solo homer from Haley Coombs in the fifth put the team up eight runs, putting them on the cusp of a run-rule win.

Down eight, Plattsburgh did not go down without a fight, rallying for four runs in the inning. After two quick outs, Palmer singled and Noll doubled, putting two runners in scoring position. Isaacs followed with an infield single, scoring Palmer and pushing the game to at least one more inning. Golino then crushed a double off the fence in left, scoring two runs and putting the Cards down 10-5. An error followed and Aislyn Liberty (Saranac, N.Y./Saranac), pinch-running from Golino, was able to score on the play to put the Cards down 10-6. Back-to-back singles then loaded the bases for Plattsburgh, bringing up the tying run, but the new Geneseo arm was able to get a strikeout to end the frame.

The sixth inning saw Geneseo add three runs on a Brooke Fraas two-run triple and then a single to center field to score Fraas, giving the Knights a seven-run cushion.

The Cards were unable to threaten in the final two innings, going down in order in both frames, falling in game two 13-6.

Gabriella Petroski earned her fourth win with 4.2 innings of work, giving up four earned runs, while Mikayla Bucci threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Rebecca Schwartz was 4-4 with two RBI in game two, while Fraas had two hits, three runs, and four RBI in the second game of the Friday twin bill.
