PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader to conference-leading SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Park, falling by a 2-0 score in game one before sustaining a 7-2 setback in game two.
Plattsburgh State falls to 7-19 overall (1-9 SUNYAC) with the losses and next hosts NCAA Division II Saint Michael's College in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24, at 3 p.m. New Paltz rises to 22-4 overall (8-0 SUNYAC) with the wins and next visits SUNY Potsdam tomorrow for a 12 p.m. conference twinbill.
Game 1: New Paltz 2, Plattsburgh State 0
New Paltz's two runs in the top of the first wound up being the only scoring in game one, as the Hawks prevailed by a 2-0 final.
Senior shortstop Rhionna Bianchini drove in first year designated player Maddie Anderson and sophomore third baseman Jaycee Filancia with a two-out single up the middle in the top of the first to give the Hawks an early 2-0 advantage. While Plattsburgh State got the tying run up to the plate with no outs in the bottom of the seventh after first-year shortstop
Sara Isaacs (Malta, N.Y./Shenendehowa) doubled to right center, New Paltz retired the next three batters to escape with the victory.
Sophomore
Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) yielded two unearned runs on three hits, two walks and two hit by pitches while striking out four in the loss for the Cardinals, while senior pitcher Lindsay Roman threw a four-hit shutout in the victory for the Hawks.
Game 2: New Paltz 7, Plattsburgh State 2
New Paltz pounded out 10 hits and scored seven runs in the nightcap to complete the sweep.
Plattsburgh State opened scoring in the bottom of the third, as graduate student pitcher/first baseman
Julia Golino (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) plated junior shortstop
Claire Palmer (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) with a single up the middle. New Paltz answered with a pair of RBI singles by senior first baseman Jillian Shelbourne and senior designated player Kelly Marmorowski in the top of the fourth before Shelbourne blasted a three-run home run in the fifth to hand the visitors a 5-1 advantage.
Isaacs drove in Palmer with a double to center field in the home half of the fifth to cut the gap to three, while Shelbourne added insurance for New Paltz with a two-run single in the top of the seventh.
Golino allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out two in the loss for the Cardinals, while junior pitcher Sydney Waldon permitted two runs on six hits and five strikeouts in the win for the Hawks. Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Zangrilli pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn the save.
Palmer led the Plattsburgh State bats by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Shelbourne batted 3-for-4 with six RBI to pace New Paltz's offense.
