Softball Falls in SUNYAC Home Doubleheader Action

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State softball team fell in both ends of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon, losing 7-1 and 7-0.

For Plattsburgh, Claire Palmer (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) had a hit in both games and scored the team's only run. Sarah Milyko (Goshen, N.Y./Chester Academy) and Michelle DeFina (Commack, N.Y./Commack) were each on base twice on the day, while Julia Golino (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) registered the team's lone RBI. Golino and Morgan Ormerod (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) each took losses in the circle in seven innings of work.

Plattsburgh State falls to 7-17 (1-7 SUNYAC) and will take on New Paltz on Saturday, April 20 beginning at noon. Oneonta improves to 10-15 (4-4 SUNYAC) and will take on Potsdam on Saturday, April 20 in more SUNYAC action.

Game One: Oneonta 7, Plattsburgh 1

The Cardinals tallied four hits in the game one loss, scoring one run as they fell 7-1 to Oneonta to start their day. Ormerod took the loss in the circle, tossing a complete game giving up five earned runs and striking out three.

Palmer finished game one 1-3 with a run scored and a walk, while Golino drove in Palmer for Plattsburgh's lone run of the game. Milyko was 1-2 in the game with a walk and Emma Deo (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) had a hit for the Cards.

Oneonta opened the scoring in the first inning of game one, leading 2-0 after a steal of home and an RBI single. They added to their lead with a two-run homer off the bat of Julia Serena to left-center field to give them a 2-0 after the top of the third inning.

The Cardinals put together their best opportunity to score in the bottom of the fifth, as a leadoff single from Milyko and back-to-back one-out walks loaded the bases for Golino. Golino hit a sharp ground ball between the shortstop and third baseman that was fielded and thrown to third for one out, allowing a run to score. Still with two runners on, the following batter flew out to center, ending the Cardinal rally as they still trailed 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Red Dragons built their lead back up, taking advantage of a Cardinal error that helped the team score three runs on just one hit, giving them a 7-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The Cardinals put two runners on in the sixth but were unable to cash in, and couldn't take advantage of a one-out walk in the seventh, falling 7-1.

Marissa Dionisio earned her second win of the year with five innings of work allowing just one run, while Anna Torgersen tossed two scoreless innings of relief. Serena drove in two runs and scored twice while Emma Stewart was 2-3 with two RBI.

Game Two: Oneonta 7, Plattsburgh 0

Plattsburgh State only managed two hits in the game two loss, although four total walks allowed them several opportunities as they left six runners on base in the 7-0 game two loss. Golino tossed a complete game, allowing seven runs over seven innings.

Palmer had a base hit and a walk to reach base twice for Plattsburgh in game two and DeFina had a hit as well, finishing 1-3 on the day.

Oneonta once again opened the scoring, using a Sophia Mangone RBI single to take a 1-0 lead after one inning.

Plattsburgh State had a golden opportunity to score in the first but were unable to cash in. Two walks to start the game and a two-out walk resulted in no runs as the Cards stranded three on base in the inning.

In the third, a pinch-hit two-run triple off the bat of Sarah Cartier gave her team a 3-0 lead over the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Oneonta started Emily Brown had settled in and was dealing, retiring nine straight from the second to the fifth before giving up the first hit of the game to Palmer with two outs.

Brown benefitted off of the smart base-running that gave them two runs on an infield single in the fourth and then two runs in the sixth. She continued to deal through the final inning, when DeFina had a leadoff single, retiring the next three batters for the complete game shutout.

Delaney Haley finished with two hits and two RBI, while both Ava Thys and Gianna Cancelleri each went 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
