Gilroy Sets Program’s Single-Game Draw Control Record; Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Oneonta in SUNYAC Action on the Road

ONEONTA, N.Y.Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) won a program record 13 draw controls, but the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team fell to Oneonta 19-6 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. After an early 3-2 Cardinal lead, the Red Dragons scored five straight and took the lead for good as the Cardinals only scored three more goals the rest of the game.

Gilory's 13 draw controls topped the program's former single-game mark of 12, which was set by Lindsay Guzzetta in 2020.

Sophomore attacker Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) led the Cardinals in points with three off of two goals and one assist. Sophomore midfielder Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.Y. / Moorestown) also had a multi-point day with two goals for the Cardinals. Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz) and Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport) put in one goal each while Gilroy and Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) both recorded an assist as Gilroy assisted on Garcia's goal and Nash on Balfour's first goal. Dickinson and Nash both picked up three ground balls to lead the team and Sophomore midfielder Ava Parsons (Vestal. N.Y. / Vestal) caused two turnovers to lead the team and picked up two ground balls on the defensive end for the Cardinals.

For the Red Dragons, Cassidy Moore led the team in points with 11 on eight goals and three assists. Marissa Evans was the next top scorer with six points off four goals and two assists.

The Red Dragons outshot the Cardinals 36-24 and had the edge in ground balls 24-13. The Cardinals won the draw-control battle 18-10. On free positions, the Cardinals were 1-1 while the Red Dragons didn't register a free position shot. On clears the Cardinals were 9-11 and the Red Dragons 22-24.

Plattsburgh moves to 3-10 overall (2-5 SUNYAC) and next hosts Oswego State in their home finale and Morgan's Message dedication game on Saturday, Apr 20 with the first draw control in the air at 11 am. Oneonta moves to 5-9 overall (3-4 SUNYAC) and next travels to Brockport on Saturday, Apr 20 with the first draw control in the air at 1 pm.

Nearly four minutes elapsed before either team got on the board in the first as Evans put one in the back of the net for the Red Dragons at the 11:14 mark. The Cardinals responded with back-to-back goals from Balfour and Barnosky that made the score 2-1 Cardinals. At the 8:50 mark, Moore tied the game at 2 shortly before Balfour scored her second goal off a free position shot and made the score 3-2 Cardinals. The Red Dragons ended the first with four straight goals and took a 6-3 lead into the second.

Moore opened the scoring in the second with a goal at the 11:31 mark followed by a goal from Dickinson off the pass of Barnosky that made the score 7-4 Red Dragons. It was Moore again at the 8:49 mark with another goal followed by a quick goal from Barnosky nine seconds later. The Red Dragons ended the second on a five-goal run and went into halftime up 13-5.

The third quarter saw the scoring slow down for both teams with only four total goals scored. Lauren Mancini opened the scoring at the 13:28 mark followed by the Cardinals' only goal of the quarter from Garcia with the assist by Gilroy. The Red Dragons tacked on two more goals at the 12:09 and 5:33 mark and made the score 16-6 at the end of the third quarter.

The Cardinals were shut out in the fourth quarter and only had four shots while the Red Dragons added on three more goals led by Evans with two as the Cardinals fell 19-6.

Graduate student goalie Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif. / El Toro) had 12 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh. Senior goalie Courtney Gallagher had 13 saves in the win for Oneonta.
