Women's Lacrosse Edges Buffalo State 11-9 in a Road SUNYAC Victory

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team got on the board first and after the Bengals tied it at one, the Cardinals took back the lead and never surrendered it as they ended a three-game losing skid with a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) 11-9 win against Buffalo State. Sophomore attacker Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y / William Floyd) led the Cardinals offense with five goals and one assist for six points on the day.

Junior midfielder Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) also recorded multiple points on the day with two goals and one assist for three points to pair with five draw controls. Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz), Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport), Abby Guasconi (Ogdensburgh, N.Y. / Ogdensburgh Free Academy), and Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.Y. / Moorestown) all posted one goal each. Senior attacker Fiona Fitzgerald (Long Beach, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) recorded an assist on Garcia's goal. Senior defender Sam Lombardi (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Sophomore defender Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) won four draw controls and caused two turnovers as well.

For the Bengals, Sage Running Rabbit and Brooklyn Hill led the way with three goals and one assist each for four points on the day.

The Bengals had a slight edge in shots 26-22 while the Cardinals won the draw-control battle 12-10. The Bengals had the advantage in ground balls 24-17. On free-position shots, the Cardinals were 3-5 while the Bengals were 2-6. On clears, the Cardinals were 12-24 and the Bengals 14-17.

Plattsburgh rises to 3-9 overall (2-4 SUNYAC) and next travels to Oneonta on Wednesday, Apr 17 with the first draw control in the air at 4 pm. Buffalo State falls to 6-5 overall (2-3 SUNYAC) and next travels to Oswego State on Tuesday, Apr 16 with the first draw control in the air at 4 pm.

The Cardinals didn't take long to get on the board as Nash scored an unassisted goal at the 14:22 mark. Running Rabbit responded nearly a minute after and got the Bengals on the board and made the score 1-1. The Cardinals ended the first with back-to-back goals at the 10:30 mark and 6:57 mark with goals from Dickinson and Garcia assisted by Barnoksy and Fitzgerald respectively as they went into the second quarter up 3-1.

Balfour opened the second with an extra player-up goal at the 9:53 mark as she took advantage of a Bengal yellow card. Lauren Rinow quickly responded followed by a goal from Hill at the 6:51 mark that made the score 4-3 Cardinals and pulled the Bengals within one. The Cardinals ended the second on a three-goal run with two extra player-up goals from Barnsoky and Guasconi and another goal from Barnosky off the pass from Nash that made the score 7-3 Cardinals at halftime.

Nash opened the third quarter with another goal at the 14:27 mark. Rinow put the Bengals on the board at the 12:37 mark. Nearly six minutes elapsed before Barnosky scored her third goal of the game and made the score 9-4 Cardinals. Hill quickly responded for the Bengals and started a four-goal run that ended the third quarter and made the score 9-8 Cardinals.

Barnoksy scored back-to-back goals at the 11:23 mark and 7:13 mark to start the fourth and gave the Cardinals a three-goal cushion. The Cardinals didn't score again and only allowed one goal in the fourth from Running Rabbit at the 3:40 mark and held on for the 11-9 SUNYAC win.

Graduate student goalie Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif. / El Toro) finished the game with seven saves for the win for Plattsburgh while sophomore goalie Moira Penot recorded six saves in the loss for Buffalo State.
