Men's Lacrosse Falls to Cortland in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team lost their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener on the road at Cortland, falling 25-9. The Cardinals got behind early and weren't able to come back as Cortland had a high-scoring day that propelled them to the victory.

Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) and Tim Keenan (Poughquag, N.Y. / Arlington) both had three points as Woods netted a three-goal hat trick and Keenan dished out three assists. John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) put two goals in the back of the net. Timmy Wood (Brooklyn, N.Y. / James Madison) and Dylan Irvine (Ogdensburgh, N.Y. / Ogdensburgh Free Academy) both netted the first goals of their career. Anthony Faber (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) and Ely Bruhns (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) also had one goal each on the day while Chris Falborn (Nanuet, N.Y. / Nanuet) picked up an assist. Kyle Ruland (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) had a good day defensively as he tied his career-high in ground balls with eight. Jimbo Farrelly (West Nyack, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) led the Cardinals with six faceoff wins.

For the Red Dragons, Sam Rothman led the team in points with eight off of five goals and three assists. Ryan Scanlon was right behind him with four goals.

The Red Dragons outshot the Cardinals 57-31 and had the edge in ground balls 57-33. The Red Dragons won the faceoff battle 25-12. The Cardinals were 3-5 on extra man-up opportunities while the Red Dragons were 3-4. On clears, the Cardinals were 26-29 and the Red Dragons were 20-25.

Plattsburgh moves to 4-6 (0-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts Oneonta on Saturday, Apr 6 with the opening faceoff dropping at 1 pm. Cortland moves to 5-3 overall (2-0 SUNYAC) and next hosts Nazareth on Wednesday, Apr 3 with the opening faceoff dropping at 4 pm.

The Red Dragons opened the first with back-to-back goals before a Falborn pass found Faber for the Cardinals first goal of the game at the 8:36 mark that made the score 2-1 Red Dragons. The Red Dragons responded with a three-goal run that made the score 5-1 Red Dragons at the end of the first.

The Red Dragons' offense continued that run into the second quarter as they opened the quarter with a six-goal run. Irvine ended the run with an unassisted goal at the 7:11 mark. Caden Yancey scored the last goal of the quarter at the 6:04 mark that made the score 12-2 Red Dragons at halftime.

Woods and Eiseman opened the third with back-to-back goals at the 14:42 mark and 11:37 mark of the quarter. Rothman scored the Red Dragons' first goal of the third at the 10:51 mark and started another six-goal run for the Red Dragons that made the score 18-4 Red Dragons. The Cardinals got back-to-back goals from Wood and Woods at the 3:02 mark and 2:16 mark. AJ Surian ended the quarter with a goal with less than 15 seconds that made the score 19-6 after three-quarters of play.

The Red Dragons opened the fourth with three straight goals with two from Stefan Swedlund. Eiseman broke up the Red Dragons scoring run with an unassisted goal at the 9:11 mark that made the score 22-7 Red Dragons. Nearly two minutes later Nick Pomilio and Frank Neeson tacked on two more goals before Bruhns responded with a goal of his own that made the score 24-8 Red Dragons. Tristan Triolo notched the Red Dragons' last goal at the 1:24 mark and Woods put in the last goal of the game with less than 20 seconds remaining as the Cardinals fell 25-9.

Senior goalie Dan Clements (Putnam Valley, N.Y. / Putnam Valley) made 13 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh while senior goalie Travis Wagner made six saves in the win for Cortland.
