Women's Lacrosse Loses First SUNYAC Game of the Season Against Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – After the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team got into an early deficit, a high-scoring offensive day from Cortland handed them their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss on Wednesday evening. After giving up 10 goals in the first quarter, the Cardinals limited the Red Dragons' offense but were not able to match the Red Dragons' scoring and ultimately fell 22-2.

Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) scored two goals on the day and was the only Cardinal to register a point. First-year defender Sloane Carr (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) led the way for ground balls with a career-high four. Sophomore midfielder Nicole Resnick (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker) came away with two caused turnovers while junior midfielder Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) had two draw controls.

For the Red Dragons, Rachel Janis and Mackenzie Beck both had five points as Janis recorded five assists and Beck had four goals and one assist.

The Red Dragons outshot the Cardinals 41-9 and had the edge in ground balls 21-12. The Red Dragons won the draw control battle 22-4. The Cardinals were 0-2 on extra man-up opportunities and the Red Dragons were 1-2. The Cardinals were 2-6 on free positions and 8-18 on clears while the Red Dragons were 5-6 and 12-13 in those categories respectively.

Plattsburgh moves to 1-6 overall (0-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts Fredonia on Saturday, March 30 with the first draw control taking place at 11 am. Cortland moves to 4-4 overall (2-0 SUNYAC) and next travels to Geneseo on Saturday, March 30 with the first draw control taking place at 1 pm.

Amy Hoeffner netted a goal at the 14:19 mark that put the Red Dragons on the board first and started a 6-0 run. Barnosky broke up the run with a goal at the 7:59 mark that made the score 6-1 Red Dragons. The Red Dragons responded with four more goals and closed the first quarter with a 10-1 lead.

After a high-scoring first quarter from the Red Dragons, the Cardinals were able to hold them to only three goals in the second. The Cardinals only had one shot in the period but caused three Red Dragon turnovers and limited their offensive opportunities. Graduate student goalie Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif. / El Toro) faced eight shots and had four saves in the quarter as the Cardinals went into halftime down 13-1.

The Red Dragons opened the third quarter with a three-goal run at the 12:18 mark and extended their lead to 16-1. Barnoksy broke up the Red Dragon run yet again with her second goal of the game at the 4:06 mark. Beck scored the last goal of the quarter with less than a minute remaining and made the score 17-2 Red Dragons after three-quarters of play.

The Red Dragons held the Cardinals scoreless in the fourth as they only had one shot that was saved. The Cardinals' defense forced three turnovers, but the Red Dragons had eight shots and tacked on five more goals that led to a 22-2 Cardinal loss.

First-year goalie Hannah Lowder took the loss in the net for Plattsburgh while Nease saw her first action of the season and made seven saves. Sophomore goalie Margaret Morgan had two saves in the win for Cortland.
