PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After a slow start offensively, the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team turned it on in the second quarter outscoring the Blue Devils 4-0 as they took a 7-4 lead into halftime that led to their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win as they beat Fredonia in a 11-10 victory.
Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) was the catalyst behind the Cardinals' offense as she netted the game-winning goal at the 4:26 mark in the fourth quarter. On the day Barnosky had three goals and two assists to lead the Cardinals in points with five.
Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz),
Rachel LaMar (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa), and
Fiona Fitzgerald (Long Beach, New York / Holy Trinity) all had three points as Garcia netted a three-goal hat trick, LaMar had two goals and an assist and Fitzgerald displayed excellent playmaking skills with three assists on the day.
Erica Dickinson (Yaphank, N.Y. / Bellport) and
Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) both had two points as Dickinson registered two goals and Nash posted one goal and one assist.
Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) led the Cardinals with four ground balls and three draw controls.
Janey Adams (Wynantskill, N.Y. / Averill Park) and
Sam Lombardi (East Atlantic Beach, New York / Kellenberg Memorial) were tough on the defensive end as they had four and three caused turnovers respectively.
For the Blue Devils, Audrey Brown and Sydney Buchko had three points with Brown registering two goals and an assist and Buchko having one goal and two assists.
The Blue Devils had the slight edge in shots with 28 to the Cardinals 26 and won the draw-control battle 14-10. The Cardinals had the advantage in ground balls 25-21. The Cardinals were 1-1 on free position shots while the Blue Devils were only 2-4. The Cardinals didn't take advantage of six Blue Devil cards as they only went 2-6 on extra man-up opportunities while the Blue Devils were slightly better at 3-6. On clears, the Cardinals were 13-17 and the Blue Devils 14-20.
Plattsburgh rises to 2-6 overall (1-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts New Paltz on Wednesday, Apr 3 with the first draw control taking place at 4 pm. Fredonia falls to 4-6 overall (0-3 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts Buffalo St. on Wednesday, Apr 3 with the first draw control taking place at 5 pm.
Leah Kunisch got the Blue Devils on the board first at the 11:23 mark and started a Blue Devil 3-0 run. Garcia broke up the run at the 5:47 mark followed by a Dickinson goal at the 4:24 mark as the Cardinals scored back-to-back and made the score 3-2 as they pulled within one. Emma Cockerel took advantage of a Cardinal green card and pushed the Blue Devil lead to two. Nash scored the last goal of the first with less than 10 seconds remaining and made the score 4-2 Blue Devils after one.
The second quarter was all Cardinals as they held the Blue Devils scoreless and put up four goals. Garcia got the four-goal run started with a goal at the 14:15 mark after a Blue Devil yellow card followed by goals from LaMar, Barnosky, and another from Garcia at the 10:40 mark, 4:58 mark, and 00:59 mark. The Blue Devils had five shots in the quarter but the Cardinal defense stood tall as they took a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Dickinson opened the third with an unassisted goal at the 13:21 mark. The Blue Devils responded with a 3-0 run that made the score 9-7 Cardinals as they pulled within one. LaMar ended the run with a goal at the 5:24 mark. Noelle Mendez responded nearly two minutes later and made the score 9-8 Cardinals. A Fitzgerald pass found Barnosky for her second goal of the game that made the score 10-8 Cardinals at the end of the third quarter.
Brown opened the fourth with a goal at the 13:08 mark. It was a scoring drought for both teams as a goal wasn't scored until the 6:06 mark from Megan Karalaus which tied the game at 10. Just under two minutes later a LaMar pass to a cutting Barnosky led to Barnosky's game-winning goal and her third of the game as the Cardinal defense held the Blue Devils at bay and secured an 11-10 victory.

Lilla Nease made 10 saves in her first start of the season in the win for Plattsburgh while first-year goalie Ashleigh Manns made five saves in the loss for Fredonia.
