PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team trailed early in a back-and-forth game as they came away with an 11-7 non-conference victory over Johnson & Wales. After going into halftime tied at 6 the Cardinals outscored the Wildcats 5-1 in the second half to secure the road victory. Senior attacker
John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) led the Cardinals in points with six, a new career-high, off of a five-goal and one-assist performance.
Cam Morin (Raynham, Mass / Bridgewater-Raynham),
Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point), and
Ely Bruhns (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) all registered three points. Morin came away with two goals and an assist while Woods and Bruhns both had one goal and two assists.
Zach Derhak (Falmouth, Maine / Falmouth) and
Tim Keenan (Poughquag, N.Y. / Arlington) both had two points while Derhak had one goal and an assist and Keenan had two assists.
Anthony Faber (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) also put one in the back of the net for the Cardinals in the contest.
Jimbo Farrelly (West Nyack, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) picked up seven faceoff wins.
For the Wildcats, Mike Catuosco led the team in points with three from one goal and two assists. Greg Centeio and Jackson Vecchio both had two goals.
Both teams shot nearly the same number of shots with the Cardinals taking a 30-29 edge. The Wildcats had a 34-22 advantage in ground balls and won the faceoff battle 13-7. The Cardinals were perfect on extra man-up opportunities going 3-3 while the Wildcats were 0-2. On clears, the Cardinals were 23-29 and the Wildcats were 15-20.
Plattsburgh rises to 4-4 with the win and next hosts New Paltz on Saturday, March 23 as they open up SUNYAC play at 3 pm. Johnson & Wales falls to 3-2 with the loss and next travels to Anna Maria College on Saturday, March 23 in a GNAC conference matchup at 12 pm.
The first quarter saw the Cardinals and Wildcats battle each other closely. The Wildcats opened the first with a goal seven seconds into the game right off the faceoff from Catuosco and added another at the 12:04 mark from Centeio. The Cardinals responded with a goal just under a minute later from Derhak off the pass of Eiseman that made the score 2-1 Wildcats. It was Centeio with another goal that added to the Wildcat lead. The Cardinals got back-to-back goals from Morin and then Eiseman as they tied the game at 3 at the 5:52 mark. Hayden Haldane scored the last goal of the first at the 5:11 mark as the Wildcats went into the second up 4-3.
The Cardinals got on the board in the first minute of play after a penalty gave them an extra man-up opportunity that Eiseman cashed in on and tied the game at 5. Vecchio responded with a goal for the Wildcats as they regained the lead 5-4. Back-to-back goals at the 10:44 and 6:18 mark from Woods and Bruhns gave the Cardinals a 6-5 lead. Donny McInnis scored the last goal of the quarter at the 2:59 mark as both teams went into halftime tied at 6.
The Cardinals' defense held the Wildcats to one goal as they took the lead into the fourth. The Cardinals opened the third with back-to-back goals from Morin and Eiseman that made the score 8-6 Cardinals. At the 12:39 mark, Vecchio scored the Wildcats only goal of the third and made the score 8-7 Cardinals. Both teams went scoreless for over 11 minutes until the Cardinals ended the quarter with a goal at the 1:08 mark from Faber off a Morin pass that made the score 9-7 Cardinals after three-quarters of play.
For over 10 minutes neither team got anything in the back of the net until Eiseman broke it open with a goal at the 4:26 mark assisted by Bruhns. It was Eiseman again at the 2:39 mark as he added on an insurance goal for the Cardinals and made the score 11-7. The Cardinals' defense stood tall as they held the Wildcats scoreless and finished the game with an 11-7 road victory.
