Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Utica at Home

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After a strong first quarter from the Utica Pioneers, the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team was not able to come from behind. The Pioneers outscored the Cardinals 8-0 in the first quarter en route to a 17-5 victory as the Cardinals fell against Utica in non-conference action. 
 
Cynthia Barnosky (Shirley, N.Y. / William Floyd) led the Cardinals in points with a three-goal hat trick with one assist and totaled four points on the day. Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y. / New Paltz) also got in the point column for the Cardinals with a goal. Mckenzie Francis-Chubb (Hogansburgh, N.Y. / Salmon River) was the last goal scorer for the Cardinals as she came away with one goal on the day. Lillian Gilroy (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) led the Cardinals in draw controls with seven. 
 
For the Pioneers, Grace Stuhlman led the team in points with five off four goals and one assist. Samantha DeCondo contributed three goals. 
 
The Pioneers had the advantage in shots 40-22 and had an 18-12 edge in ground balls as well. The Cardinals won the draw control battle 13-11. Neither team took advantage of free position shots as the Cardinals went 0-6 and the Pioneers 0-1. The Cardinals went 0-2 on extra man-up opportunities while the Pioneers cashed in on their one opportunity. On clears, the Cardinals were 12-17 and the Pioneers 13-16. 
 
Plattsburgh moves to 1-4 with the loss and next travels to Union College on Wednesday, March 20 with the first draw control taking place at 4:30 pm. Utica moves to 4-2 with the win and next hosts Morrisville on Wednesday, March 20 with the first draw control taking place at 4 pm. 
 
The first quarter saw the Pioneers outscore the Cardinals 8-0. Off the pass from G. Stuhlman, Alyssa Drell scored the first goal of the game at the 12:34 mark. The Drell goal started a 10-goal run for the Pioneers that went into the second quarter. The Cardinals only got four shots off in the quarter and three of them were on goal saved by first-year Pioneer goalie Makayla Purdy as she shot out the Cardinals and the Pioneers went into the second up 8-0. 
 
The Pioneers continued their 10-goal run with a goal from Maria Stuhlman at the 14:07 mark and then at the 10:50 mark from Jordan Kowalski, who was a former Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey and lacrosse player. Francis-Chubb broke up the run and got the Cardinals on the board at the 9:33 mark and made the score 10-1 Pioneers. Decondo scored the last goal of the second at the 2:57 mark as the Pioneers went into halftime up 11-1. 
 
Barnosky opened the scoring in the third with a goal at the 13:54 mark that made the score 11-2 Pioneers. The Pioneers closed the third with a five-goal run and made the score 16-2 Pioneers after three quarters of play. 
 
The fourth quarter saw the Cardinals outscore the Pioneers 3-1. Barnosky opened the fourth with back-to-back goals at the 14:36 mark and 11:20 mark that started a three-goal run for the Cardinals. Garcia capped off the run with a goal at the 9:15 mark and made the score 16-5 Pioneers. Jessica Marciano scored the final goal of the game at the 6:34 mark and made the score 17-5 Pioneers which held until the end of the game as the rest of the quarter saw no more goals. 
 
First-year goalie Jess Loch (Tappan, N.Y. / Tappan Zee) made three saves in the loss for Plattsburgh. First-year goalie Hannah Lowder (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) also saw some action and finished the game with a career-high seven saves. Purdy finished the game with six saves in the win for Utica.
