No. 3 Women's Ice Hockey Falls to No. 10 Cortland in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – In a ranked State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) the No. 3 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey fell to No. 10 Cortland 2-0 at Alumni Arena.

Plattsburgh State is currently ranked at No. 3 in the Division III USCHO.com Top-15 Poll, while Cortland is ranked at No. 10.

Shots on goal were nearly even, as Cortland had a slim 29-28 edge over Plattsburgh. Special teams were not much of a factor in the matchup, as each team went 0-1 on the advantage.

Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass./Northwood School) made 27 saves in goal for the Cardinals, taking her first career loss in goal. Three Cardinals put four shots on goal, as first-year forward Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla./Philadelphia), first-year defender Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea/Ontario Hockey Academy), and senior defender Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) led the Plattsburgh offensive attack.

Plattsburgh State falls to 1-1 (0-1 SUNYAC) and next takes on Potsdam in road SUNYAC action next Friday, November 15th on the road. Cortland improves to 3-0 (1-0 SUNYAC) and next heads to Canton on Friday, November 15th.

A strong first period from the Red Dragons set the tone for Cortland, as they outshot Plattsburgh State 10-4. The strong effort eventually resulted in the lead at the 16:59 mark as Fanny Aneborn gave her team the 1-0 lead.

The next two periods saw a stronger attack from the Cardinals, putting 12 shots on goal in each period, but the team was unable to get the puck past Molly Goergen. The senior Goergen earned the shutout win, making 28 saves.

After a scoreless second period, Kayla Persinger sealed the win for the Red Dragons with a goal just over four minutes into the third period to take a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals had some chances late, but Goergen stood on her head to lift Cortland to the 2-0 win, as they have now won three straight games against Plattsburgh, dating back to last season.

Taryn Raisanen, Katie Mahoney, Natalie O'Brien, and Mia Hlasnick each had assists for the Red Dragons in the win.
