No. 7 Women's Ice Hockey Picks Up First SUNYAC Win of 2024-25, Beats Potsdam 3-0

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The No. 7 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team picked up their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win of the season on Friday night, taking down Potsdam 3-0 on the road. Adriana Urban (Monroe, N.J./Hoosac School) notched the game-winning score with five minutes to go in the first period.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are ranked at No. 7 in the latest USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.

Urban scored her first goal of the season to open the scoring, with two third-period goals from the Cards sealing the victory. Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite) scored at the 12:14 mark to give the Cardinals a big insurance goal. Kate Conlon (New Hudson, Mich./Little Caesars) sealed the win with her first collegiate goal a minute later, as the Cardinals won the shot battle 38-13 on the night.

Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass./Northwood School) picked up her first shutout of the season, making 13 saves in 60 minutes of action. Neither team was able to take advantage of special teams, however, with the Cards going 0-5 and the Bears 0-4 on the evening.

Plattsburgh State improves to 2-1 (1-1 SUNYAC) and next travels to Oswego State on Saturday, Nov. 16, for a 3 p.m. matchup. Potsdam falls to 2-1-1 (0-1-1) with the loss and next take on No. 5 Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 16, who is coming off a loss to Canton.

The Cardinals dominated this matchup from the start, outshooting the Bears 16-3 in the first 20 minutes. Despite not scoring on two power plays in the first stanza, the Cards took the lead for good at the 15:00 minute mark of the first, as Urban snuck a shot in from the point to put Plattsburgh up 1-0. The Potsdam goalie looked to have made an initial save, but the puck snuck past the goalie and into the net for the score.

The second period saw the Cardinals still outshoot the home team, but just 10-5. The Bears had three penalties in the period, with six minutes of the 20 in the period resulting in an advantage for Potsdam. In those power plays, however, the Bears only put up two shots, as the Cardinal penalty kill was up to the task.

In the third period, the Cardinals had some early power play opportunities, but could not take advantage, as they still led by just 1-0 halfway through the stanza. Plattsburgh finally got the insurance they were looking for just after the 12-minute mark in the period, as Ella Procyk (Stratford, Conn./Lovell Academy) picked up a puck after a Bears' turnover for an odd-man rush with Kasprzak.  A shot by Procyk was initially saved, but Kasprzak was there for the rebound and score.

Less than a minute later, Conlon tallied her first career score to seal the win for Plattsburgh, as Su-An Cho (Madison, Ala./Florida Alliance) and Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire) each picked up assists. Cho made the stretch pass up to the blue line to find Wall entering the offensive zone where she dumped the puck off to Conlon at the point. Conlon skated up the slot before ripping a shot toward the top shelf, where she found the back of the net for an impressive score for her first at the collegiate level.

Each team had a power play down the stretch but could not take advantage, as Potsdam could not get any offense going even with their goalie off the ice for over three minutes of action.

Magalie Parent made 35 saves in net for Potsdam in nearly 57 minutes of action, taking her first loss of the year.
