No. 7 Women's Ice Hockey Ties in Road SUNYAC Contest Against Oswego State

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 7 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team traveled to Oswego State on Saturday afternoon and tied the Lakers 2-2 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action in the Deborah F. Stanley Ice Arena.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are the No. 7 ranked team in the most recent USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.

Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) and Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev./North American Hockey Academy) each tallied power play goals for Plattsburgh State, as the team went 2-4 on the advantage in the game. The team held Oswego to 0-3 on the power play and allowed just one shot.

On the day, Plattsburgh State outshot the Lakers 47-22, with their goaltender Lexi Levy making 45 saves. Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass/Northwood School) made 20 saves in goal to earn the tie for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh State moves to 2-1-1 (1-1-1 SUNYAC) on the season and next takes on Canton at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22. Oswego State moves to 4-0-1 (2-0-1 SUNYAC) and next takes on No. 5 Cortland at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22.

A scoreless first stanza saw the Cardinals outshoot the Lakers 11-7, with Plattsburgh State holding Oswego shotless on their first power play of the afternoon.

In the second period, the Cards went on the powerplay just over three minutes into the period. It took just 11 seconds for Plattsburgh to take the lead from the advantage, as Norton settled a pass from Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire) in the left faceoff circle and found the right corner of the net for a top shelf score. Wall and Kayson Ruegge (Edmond, Okla./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) picked assists on the play.

Two minutes later, Plattsburgh State was on another power play, this time for just 24 seconds as Olshansky registered the goal.  A Kate Conlon (New Hudson, Mich./Little Caesars) shot was saved by Levy and then deflected by Wall to Olshansky on the opposite side of the net, as she tapped in the rebound on the doorstep for the score.

A second period shot advantage went 13-6 in favor of Plattsburgh and then 15-8 in third. However, the Lakers scored two goals in under 30 seconds of gametime in the third period, with an unassisted Elizabeth Cooler goal at the 15:05 mark and a Jenna Majewski score at the 15:31 mark.

The Lakers then went on the power play with just under two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the period, but the Cards were able to kill the penalty and send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Plattsburgh State went on the power play and put up five shots but were unable to score. Overall, the team outshot Oswego 8-1 in the period, but Levy stood tall to secure the tie.

A shootout was conducted after the game with just a potential tiebreaker on the line in the SUNYAC standings. The Lakers were able to win the shootout 1-0.
