No. 6 Women's Ice Hockey Tops No. 14 Norwich, 3-1, in Season Opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In a rivalry series that has seen the previous three meetings go into overtime, the No. 6 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team settled the most recent chapter in regulation, as the Cardinals prevailed, 3-1, over No. 14 Norwich University in the regular-season opener for both teams on Saturday at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 6 in the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-15 Poll, while Norwich is ranked at No. 14.

The Cardinals owned a 29-23 edge in shots on goal in addition to going 1-for-4 on the power play. The Cadets were scoreless on two chances with the extra skater.

Plattsburgh State rises to 1-0-0 overall with the win and opens State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with defending conference champion and 10th-ranked SUNY Cortland on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. Norwich falls to 0-1-0 with the loss and visits No. 5 Elmira College next on Friday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m.

Sophomore defender Maeghan Forsyth (Billings, Mont./Notre Dame Hounds) scored her first collegiate goal just 2:19 into the first period to put the Cardinals on the board early. First-year forward Tessa Morris (Grand Island, N.Y./Rome Girls' Hockey) dropped a short pass back to first-year forward Ella Procyk (Stratford, Conn./Lovell Academy) in the defensive zone, and Procyk entered the attacking end with four Cadets surrounding her. She slid the puck over to Forsyth in the right circle, and Forsyth wristed a shot that beat the Cadet goaltender stick side. It marked the first collegiate points for both Morris and Procyk.

Norwich evened the score with 12:03 elapsed in the opening stanza. Sophomore forward Marja Linzbichler intercepted a clearing attempt by the Cardinals in the neutral zone and charged into the attacking zone on the right side. She dropped a pass back to first-year defender Jordan Brady, who deposited a shot high blocker side into the back of the net.

At 14:01 of the first period, senior defender Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) scored on the power play by burying what wound up being the game-winning goal. Graduate student forward Mae Olshansky (Las Vegas, Nev./North American Hockey Academy) wrapped a pass around to Norton along the left corner boards, and Norton passed over to first-year defender Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea/Ontario Hockey Academy). Yoo fed Norton right back just inside the blue line before Norton snapped a shot off that beat the goaltender glove side. Yoo's assist serves as her first collegiate point.

Senior forward Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy) added insurance with a goal 5:52 into the second. Sophomore defender Adriana Urban (Monroe, N.J./Hoosac School) got the puck to junior forward Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J./New Jersey Titans) at the top of the left circle, and Riggi backhanded a shot toward the net that Orr redirected through the five-hole.

While Norwich held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal in the third period, the Cadets were unable to draw any closer, as the Cardinals held on for the win.

Sophomore goaltender Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass./Northwood School) earned the win by making 22 saves in between the pipes for the Cardinals, while graduate student goaltender Leocadia Clark stopped 26 shots in the loss for the Cadets.
