BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (15-25, 9-25, 7-25) decision to Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore right-side hitters
Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) and
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. Longwood) had five and four kills respectively while sophomore outside hitter
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) had four kills as well. Defensively, junior defensive specialist
Bridget Ryan (Mattituck, N.Y. / Mattituck) registered six digs followed by junior right-side hitter
Melina Morillo (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx Latin) with five. First-year setter
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) tallied five assists.
For the Bengals, Ella Wittman led the attack with 12 kills while Karlie Shaffer had 21 assists. Sarah Dauer defended eight digs.
The Bengals hit .325 for the match and held the upper hand in service aces 11-0. The Cardinals registered two blocks and 26 digs for the match while the Bengals had three blocks and 41 digs.
Plattsburgh moves to 3-13 overall (0-2 SUNYAC) and next hosts Cortland on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. Buffalo State moves to 10-8 overall (2-0 SUNYAC) and next plays New Paltz on Friday, Oct. 11.
The Bengals opened the first set with a 9-3 lead before two kills from Girma sparked a 3-0 run and made the score 9-6 Bengals. The Bengals responded with a 5-0 surge and extended their lead to 14-6. The Cardinals couldn't string along any runs to match the Bengals offense as both teams traded points and the Cardinals eventually fell 25-15.
After an attacking error made the score 7-2 Bengals, the Bengals went on a 9-0 tear and took a 16-2 lead. A kill from
Maggie Lyon (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) followed by an error on the Bengals ended the run and made the score 17-4 Bengals. After a kill from Mulvey, the Bengals went on another run pushing their lead to 21-6 before ultimately winning 25-9.
Both teams traded points to open the third set before a 9-0 run from the Bengals gave them a 12-2 lead. Despite a kill from Girma breaking up the run, the Bengals went on another one extending their lead to 19-3 as they eventually took a 25-7 victory to win the match.
