PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team fell to Cortland 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-16) in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday night at Memorial Hall.
Sophomore outside hitter
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) and sophomore right-side hitter
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) both had four kills for the Cardinals while first-year setter
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) had seven assists. On the defensive end, Girma had six digs followed by junior defensive specialist
Bridget Ryan (Mattituck, N.Y. / Mattituck) with five while junior setter
Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ariz. / Seton Catholic Prep) and sophomore middle blocker
Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y. / Le Roy) tallied two block assists.
For the Red Dragons, Kyrah Wilbur led all players in kills with 13 while Ryan Hinshaw led all players in assists with 18. Anna Pilkey defended 11 digs to lead all players.
The Red Dragons hit .345 for the match and held the upper hand in service aces 8-2. The Cardinals recorded 26 digs and three blocks for the match while the Red Dragons had 32 digs and five blocks.
Plattsburgh moves to 3-14 overall (0-3 SUNYAC) and next hosts Morrisville tomorrow, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. Cortland moves to 14-5 overall (3-0 SUNYAC) and next travels to Potsdam tomorrow, Oct. 12.
The Red Dragons opened the first set with a 12-3 lead and while a kill from Mulvey drew the Cardinals within eight a 6-0 run for the Red Dragons extended their lead to 18-4. Two service aces from Girma powered a 3-0 run for the Cardinals and made the score 21-9 but Cortland pulled away and won 25-12.
After a service error opened the second set, the Red Dragons scored three straight and took a 3-1 lead. Back-to-back points for the Cardinals ended a 5-0 Red Dragons' run and made the score 9-5 Red Dragons. Another run for the Red Dragons extended their lead to 14-6 but a 3-0 run started by a kill from Mulvey brought the Cardinals within striking distance and made the score 18-13 Red Dragons. A kill from Lyon made the score 21-14 but the Red Dragons scored the final four points and won the second set 25-14.
After both teams traded points to start the set a 3-0 run for the Red Dragons gave them a 6-3 lead. Back-to-back points for the Cardinals made the score 9-7 Red Dragons. Pilkey and Girma traded kills before a 5-0 burst from the Red Dragons pushed their lead to 19-10. The Cardinals made a final push with a 3-0 run that made the score 23-15 but it wasn't enough as the Red Dragons took the final set 25-16 to secure a 3-0 match victory.
