Women’s Tennis Earns SUNYAC Playoff Berth With 4-3 Win Over Fredonia in Regular Season Finale

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team beat Fredonia 4-3 in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) finale on Saturday morning after Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Peru) clinched the match victory at No. 3 singles. With the win over Fredonia, the Cardinals clinched a SUNYAC playoff spot for the first time since 2017. This is the Cardinals' first time appearing in the new four-team tournament format that was introduced in 2018.

Plattsburgh State concluded their regular season 7-4 overall (2-3 SUNYAC) and clinched a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament as the fourth seed. The SUNYAC Tournament will be held in the Spring of 2025 from April 25-26 as the four-seeded Cardinals will play the number one seed that is yet to be determined on April 25 at 1 p.m. Fredonia finishes their season 5-7 overall (1-4 SUNYAC) as they were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

The Cardinals started off hot, taking all three doubles matches to earn the one point awarded for winning the majority of doubles matches. Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y. / Beekmantown) and Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) started the day off with a dominant 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, followed by a win from Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y. / Nanuet) and Mitchell at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, to clinch the point for doubles. Megan Phelps (Ballston Spa, N.Y. / Ballston Spa) and Sophia Gottschall (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) wrapped up doubles play with a 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 3 doubles giving the Cardinals the doubles sweep.

In singles play, the Cardinals continued their great start winning at No. 4 and No. 5 singles giving them a commanding 3-0 lead. Gottschall got the action started earning the first singles win at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-4 followed by Cantwell at No. 5 singles as she took both sets 6-3. A victory for the Blue Devils at No. 2 singles got them their first point of the day as the Cardinals held a 3-1 lead.

The Cardinals didn't take long to respond as Mitchell was able to clinch the match victory at No. 3 singles taking her match 6-3, 6-3 for her eighth singles win of the season. The Blue Devils picked up two more points winning the final two matches at No. 1 and 6 singles as the Cardinals took a 4-3 victory in their regular season finale.
