PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest at home to Cortland, falling 2-0.
After allowing two first-half goals the Cardinals shut the Red Dragons out in the second half, but their offense couldn't get one in the back of the net.
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y. / Arlington) made three saves in 90 minutes of action. Offensively, the Cardinals only registered three shots but were able to get two of those shots on goal as
Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) and
Alexis Patrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y. / Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) were both able to put one on frame.
Cortland won the shot battle 15-3 but the Cardinal defense limited them to only four shots in the second half after giving up 11 in the first. The Cardinals only earned one corner kick while the Red Dragons had seven.
Plattsburgh State moves to 3-8 (2-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next travels to Oneonta on Wednesday, Oct. 9 for a 4 p.m. contest. Cortland moves to 4-2-4 (2-0-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts Oswego State on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
The Red Dragons offense controlled the possession early on registering five shots in the first 25 minutes while the Cardinals only had one. Not long after, the Red Dragons finally put one past Haley off the foot of Piper Klammer in the 27
th minute. The Red Dragons tacked on another goal in the 29
th minute by Katie Cosenza pushing their lead to 2-0.
The Cardinals' defensive line of
Amy Crowley (Wallkill, N.Y. / Wallkill),
Casey Granger (Hopewell Junction, N.Y. / Arlington),
Lia Parker (Cadyville, N.Y. / Saranac), and Patrick stood tall the rest of the second half as the Red Dragons had three more opportunities to score after earning corner kicks in the 34
th and 35
th minutes and putting a shot on goal that Haley turned away, keeping the score at 2-0 after one half of play.
The second half began with two shots from the Red Dragons but a foul on the Red Dragons gave the Cardinals a scoring opportunity with a free kick in the 53
rd minute. Patrick took the free kick, placing a shot directly on goal. The keeper was able to save it, not leaving any opportunity for a rebound.
Cortland controlled possession down the stretch and didn't allow a shot from the Cardinals until the 86
th minute after Patrick placed a free kick in the box giving the Cardinals a chance right at the doorstep. Peterson-Ross found the ball in the box and took a one-touch shot that was saved keeping the Cardinals scoreless. Another opportunity came for the Cardinals on a late corner in the 88
th minute but the cross went right into the goalie's hands, not allowing the Cardinals a shot. From there, Cortland was able to hold on for the shutout win.
