FREDONIA, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match against Fredonia, falling 3-0 (22-25, 15-25, 22-25) on Friday night at Dods Hall Gymnasium.
Sophomore right-side hitter
Darby Collyear (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) keyed the Cardinal attack with nine kills, while first-year setter
Anabella Almeida (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) and junior setter
Kyleigh Ganz (Phoenix, Ari. / Seton Catholic Prep) had 13 and seven assists respectively. Defensively, junior defensive specialist
Bridget Ryan (Mattituck, N.Y. / Mattituck) defended 12 digs while junior outside hitter
Sanaia Estime (West Hempstead, N.Y. / West Hempstead) and sophomore middle blocker
Katie Salphine (Le Roy, N.Y. / Le Roy) both tallied two blocks.
For the Blue Devils, Kylie O'Brien led the attack with 13 kills, while Molly Cassidy distributed 18 assists. Maeve Musielak registered 18 digs.
The Cardinals matched the Blue Devils in blocks with four while the Blue Devils held the upper hand in service aces 8-4 and a 53-44 advantage in digs.
Plattsburgh moves to 3-12 overall (0-1 SUNYAC) and next plays Buffalo State at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 5. Fredonia moves to 8-11 overall (1-0 SUNYAC) and hosts Potsdam tomorrow, Oct. 5.
The Cardinals jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Blue Devils countered with a 4-0 run that made the score 8-6 Cardinals. The two teams traded points until a 5-0 surge gave the Blue Devils their first lead and made the score 21-20. An
Iris Mulvey (Middle Island, N.Y. / Longwood) kill tied the score at 22 but the Blue Devils scored the next three points earning them a 25-22 win.
The Blue Devils opened the second set with a 7-1 lead before kills from Collyear and
Liya Girma (Sachse, Texas / Bishop Lynch) ended the Blue Devils run and made the score 7-3. The Cardinals continued to climb back as back-to-back points for the Cardinals made the score 10-7 Blue Devils. A kill from Collyear made the score 16-10 Blue Devils but the Blue Devils pulled away after a 4-0 surge gave them a 20-10 lead en route to a 25-15 win.
In the third set, both teams kept it close as the largest lead was 8-4 Blue Devils after a bad set from the Cardinals gave them the point. A kill from Mulvey followed by a service ace from Almeida tied the score at 10. A 4-0 surge from the Cardinals gave them a 14-12 lead before a two-point response from the Blue Devils made the score 14 all. The two teams traded points until three straight points from the Blue Devils gave them a 23-21 lead. An attacking error from the Blue Devils brought the Cardinals closer but the Blue Devils went on to score the final two points for a 25-22 win to clinch the match 3-0.
