Women’s Tennis Drops Conference Match to Cortland

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -  The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match on Friday evening.

Plattsburgh State moves to 6-4 (1-3 SUNYAC) with the loss and next takes on Fredonia in their regular-season finale at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. With a win Saturday, the Cardinals can clinch a SUNYAC playoff berth. Cortland moves to 6-3 (3-1 SUNYAC) with the win and takes on defending champions New Paltz tomorrow, Oct. 5.

After Cortland took the first two doubles matches to earn the doubles points, the Cardinals responded with a win at No. 2 doubles avoiding the sweep. Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y. / Beekmantown) and Kristy Cantwell (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) won their match 7-5 for the pairing's sixth win on the season.

Singles action saw three straight wins for Cortland, as the Red Dragons earned the conference win after picking up their fourth point of the day. Cortland won another match before Hurwitz was able to pick up a point for the Cardinals at No. 2 singles defeating her opponent 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 earning her second overall win of the day and her sixth singles win of the season. Cortland won the final match of the evening as the Cardinals fell 6-1.
