Licata's Brace Leads Women's Soccer to SUNYAC Win Over Potsdam

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Kelly Licata (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) recorded her first career brace on Wednesday night as the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team defeated Potsdam 3-0 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match at the Field House Complex Turf.

Allison Brown (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) tallied the team's third and final goal as Ella Santomassimo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) tallied the assist. Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) recorded her second straight shutout, making five saves in 90 minutes. On the night, the Cardinals won the shot battle 11-9 and also earned three corners while the Bears earned two. Each team had five shots on goal.

The Cards move to 4-11-1 (3-4-1 SUNYAC) on the season and next play SUNY Canton on Saturday, Oct. 26 for Senior Day. Prior to the game, the team will honor its seven seniors and recognize their lone graduate student in Brown, Amanda Cohen (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas), Casey Granger (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington), Haley, Mackenzie Lawless (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville), Catrina Maltes (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), Jessica Mare (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), and Santomassimo. The team will need a win Saturday and Fredonia loss or tie to earn the sixth and final spot into the SUNYAC playoffs. Potsdam falls to 3-13-0 (1-7-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and next takes on Morrisville in their season finale on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Cardinals wasted little time getting themselves in position to score earning two corner kicks within in the first nine minutes. In the 11th minute, Licata took on three Potsdam defenders by herself, dribbling from just inside the attacking third all the way to the top of the 18-yard box around the three Bears, ripping a low shot off her left foot. The ball somehow made its way through the last two Potsdam defenders and found the corner of the goal to give Plattsburgh the 1-0 lead.

Licata added on in the 26th minute, with a near identical goal, this time taking the ball from midfield off a Potsdam deflection. From there, she beat her defender to her dominant left foot and put another low shot into the same corner as before, securing her first career brace and third goal of the season.

The Cards weren't done there, however, as Brown tallied a 33rd minute goal after an excellent through ball from Santomassimo over the Potsdam backline. Brown was able to stay onside, beating the defenders to the ball and leaving just the Bears' goalie in front of her. The senior then ripped a shot from just inside the box, past the Potsdam goalie for the 3-0 Cardinal lead.

The second half did not see as much action as the first stanza, as shots were even at five apiece. Haley did make three of her five saves in the second part of the game's action, keeping her fourth shutout of the season intact as well as the Plattsburgh win.

Caroline Vines made two saves in goal for Potsdam, playing all 90 minutes.
