PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team took home a Senior Day win on Saturday afternoon, defeating SUNY Canton 2-0 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Junior
Claire Bottjer (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and senior
Jessica Mare (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) each scored in the win.
The team celebrated seven seniors
Allison Brown (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial),
Amanda Cohen (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas),
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington),
Mackenzie Lawless (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville),
Catrina Maltes (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), Mare, and
Ella Santomassimo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) before the game and also honored
Casey Granger (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington) who returned for her fifth year in 2024 and was honored last year.
Macie Bolton (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) had the assist on Bottjer's goal, as each score was the third of their respective seasons. Haley earned the shutout win, without facing a shot. The Cardinals outshot the 'Roos 20-0, holding them without a shot over 90 minutes.
With the win, Plattsburgh improves to 5-11-1 (4-4-1 SUNYAC), completing the 2024 season. Despite the win, Fredonia's win over Oneonta gave them the final spot in the SUNYAC tournament. Canton falls to 1-14-2 (0-9-0) with the loss and also completes their 2024 season.
The Cardinals dominated all 90 minutes of action, rarely giving away possession or having to defend for extended periods of time in their defensive third. While the team had plenty of shot attempts, it took some time for the Cardinals to get a ball in the back of the net. Finally, in the 37
th minute, Bolton played an excellent pass into the box for Bottjer, who finished from close range for the goal.
The 1-0 lead held into halftime, as the Cards held a 20-0 advantage on shots.
In the second stanza, Plattsburgh State continued to control play, earning the game-sealing score in the 62
nd minute, as Mare intercepted a goalie pass and deposited a shot into the back of the net for her third goal in her final collegiate game.The 2-0 stood through the final 28-plus minutes, as the team continued to control possession and take home the win in their final game of the season.
Skylar Williams made nine saves on the day, playing all 90 minutes in goal for Canton.
