Women's Soccer Falls in Final Non-Conference Contest, 2-1, to St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team dropped their final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday, as St. Lawrence took home the 2-1 win over the Cardinals. Kathy Peterson-Ross (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) notched her first career goal in the loss for the Cards.

Peterson-Ross tied the game early in the second half for the Cardinals, as Alexis Patrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) picked up her first career assist on the score. Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) played all 90 minutes in goal, taking the loss while making four saves. St. Lawrence attempted 19 shots to Plattsburgh's seven, but the teams were nearly even in shots on goal, with the Saints taking a 6-4 advantage in that category.

Plattsburgh State falls to 3-7 with the loss and next hosts Cortland in conference action on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. St. Lawrence improves to 5-3-1 and next travels to Ithaca for Liberty League action on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The Saints jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as a fifth minute goal from Meredith Donahue put St. Lawrence ahead before the Cardinals could even put a shot on goal. The lead held through the first half, as the Cardinals were held to just one shot on goal and two corner kicks for the reminder of the first stanza.

The second half began with three shots from the Saints but a quick response from the Cardinals in the 55th minute saw Patrick attempt a shot on goal that was saved. Off the rebound, however, Peterson-Ross was there to clean up the mess, putting the ball into the back of the net to tie the game and tally her first career goal.

Each team gave themselves opportunities throughout the second stanza, but none would come to fruition until a Plattsburgh foul in the box gave the Saints a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Grace Mochnal got the try to go, giving St. Lawrence the lead with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Down the stretch, the Saints were able to control possession, not allowing the Cards one shot until the 89th minute, when a Patrick shot was wide right. From there, St. Lawrence was able to run out the clock and ear the win.

Darcie McDonough earned the win in goal, allowing one goal and making three saves.
