Three First Period Goals Power No. 4 Women's Ice Hockey to SUNYAC Win at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 4 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team used three first-period goals to pull out to a big lead over Oswego State and cruise to a 4-1 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over the Lakers. Junior Riley Calhoun (New Hartford, N.Y./Bishop Kearney Selects) registered the game-winning score for the Cardinals in the Saturday afternoon victory.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently ranked No. 4 in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 poll.

Along with Calhoun, Adriana Urban (Monroe, N.J./Hoosac School), Zsofia Pazmandi (Kapsovar, Hungary/Ontario Hockey), and Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) each tallied scores to lead the Cardinals to victory, while Pazmandi and Norton also registered assists for a multi-point showing for both players. Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 10 saves to earn the win as the Cards played stout defense to hold the Lakers to just 11 shots.

Plattsburgh scored their fourth and final goal on their first power play of the afternoon, finishing 1-5 on the advantage while killing all three of Oswego's advantage opportunities. The Cardinals also outshot the Lakers 30-11 over 60 minutes of play.

The Cards improve to 10-2-1 (7-1 SUNYAC) with the win and will next matchup with No. 4 Middlebury at home on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Oswego State falls to 6-6-1 (4-3-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts Potsdam on Friday, Jan. 12.

After going scoreless in the first period the day before, Plattsburgh State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in this one, as Urban tallied her second career goal at the 2:03 mark, as a long shot from the point found its way through the five-hole of the Laker's netminder.

The Cardinals added to their lead just over three minutes later as Calhoun scored her second goal of the season after Aizah Thompson (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) forced a turnover in the neutral zone. The giveaway sprung Calhoun for a wide-open opportunity against the goalie, where she finished for the score, once again through the five-hole of the opposing goalie.

Plattsburgh capped off the three-goal first period at the 17:52 mark, as the team's leading goal-scorer Pazmandi tallied her 10th goal of the year, after a Norton pass from the blue-line found Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) behind the goalie line, where she passed to Pazmandi in front of the crease for score in traffic.

With a 3-0 lead, the Cardinals settled in throughout the rest of the game, controlling play, and providing a fantastic defensive effort to stymie the Laker offense. Plattsburgh tallied their final goal on a power play opportunity in the second period, as Norton registered just her second goal of the year at the 5:30 mark of action. Taking a pass from Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass./Norwich), Norton skated just outside of the slot, finishing with a strong slapshot bar down for the goal.

Plattsburgh's only momentarily lapse came on the Laker's lone goal, as Lauren Schell scored shorthanded just before the end of the second period. In the period, the teams combined for seven total power plays on seven penalties, leading to several advantage opportunities for each team.

In the third period, the Cards continued their strong play, holding Oswego to just two shots on goal, sealing the SUNYAC win.

Lexi Levy took the loss in goal for Oswego, making nine saves, while Hannah Skavnak made 17 saves and allowed no goals over 34 minutes of action.
