No. 5 Women's Ice Hockey Scores Season-High Seven Goals in 7-1 Rout over Morrisville

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 5 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team returned home on Friday, Jan. 12, and took down the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs 7-1 for a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win. Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked) notched her second career goal in her 100th career game, as the graduate student defender registered the game-winner with a power play goal in the first period.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently ranked No. 5 in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.

The Cardinals had six different goal scorers on the night, as Wasik, Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American), Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire), Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), Aizah Thompson (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons), Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) all scored, with Norton tallying scores twice. Wall and Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass./Norwich) each tallied four points for the Cards in the win, while Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 14 saves to earn the victory in net.

The Cardinals were spectacular on special teams, scoring on their first three power play opportunities and ending the night 3-5 on the advantage while Morrisville went 1-3. Plattsburgh State outshot the Mustangs 36-15, dominating the puck in the offensive zone throughout.

Plattsburgh State moves to 11-2-1 (8-1 SUNYAC) while Morrisville falls to 8-6 (3-4 SUNYAC). The teams will play their third game of the year tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. in their season finale.

The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the scoreboard and jumping out to lead as Orr rebounded a saved Wall shot just to the right of the slot for her fifth goal of the year, just 35 seconds into the game action.

On the power play, Plattsburgh added their second goal and eventual game-winner on the advantage, as Wasik sunk a deep shot for the point for just the second goal in her strong career as a Cardinal. Norton tallied the final goal of the period on the power play at the 17:35 mark, as she rebounded a saved Masotta shot just outside the crease to give the Cards a comfortable three-goal lead.

The offensive onslaught continued into the second period as Wall notched a score at the 3:59 mark, as she was able to put in another Masotta shot that was saved, as the puck came loose in the crease. Boric added to the lead with another Plattsburgh goal less than three minutes, scoring her third goal of the season on a one-timer from the left face off circle that beat the Morrisville goalie stick side. The goal gave Plattsburgh their third power play score of the game, as they had tallied on all three of their advantage opportunities through the 6:45 mark of action.

The third period did not see any letup from Plattsburgh, as they added two more goals to get to their season-high total of seven goals. Norton registered her second goal of the game at the 3:57 point of action, and her third in her last two games, as she buried a shot from the point to put the Cards up 6-0. A Mustang's power play goal at the 12:52 mark finally got Morrisville on the scoreboard, but Plattsburgh responded with a Thompson score less than three minutes later to bring the score to its final total of 7-1.

Maggie Jones received the loss in net for the Mustangs, making four saves in 13 minutes of action, while Elizabeth Timby stopped 25 shots in over 46 minutes of play. Allie Davidson scored the lone Morrisville goal, while Tilly Couture picked up an assist.
