No. 4 Women's Ice Hockey Drops SUNYAC Contest in Road Matchup with Oswego State

OSWEGO, N.Y. – In their first game of the new year, the No. 4 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team sustained just their second loss of the season, also taking their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss of the year, falling to Oswego State 3-2 on the road. This marked just the second time in 49 meetings the Lakers have defeated the Cardinals, with the only other occurrence happening in November 2016.

Plattsburgh State is currently ranked No. 4 in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.

Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass./Norwich) and Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif/Anaheim Lady Ducks) each scored for Plattsburgh State, but the two scores weren't enough to overcome three first-period goals. Lila Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) took the loss in goal, while Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass./Northwood School) made 14 saves without allowing a goal in over 38 minutes of action. Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) and Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass./New Hampshire) each tallied two assists for the Cards.

Plattsburgh earned just one power play and was not able to score but killed off three Oswego power plays during the league match and won the shot battle 36-22.
The Cardinals fall to 9-2-1 (6-1-0 SUNYAC) and will take on the Lakers tomorrow, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. Oswego moves to 6-5-1 (4-2-1 SUNYAC) as they will look for the weekend sweep tomorrow against Plattsburgh.

The first period saw the Lakers come out swinging, scoring a goal in the first two minutes, and adding goals at the 12:09 and 18:51 mark to take a commanding 3-0 lead over the Cardinals.  Despite Plattsburgh outshooting their opponent 15-8 over the first 20 minutes, Oswego was able to find the back of the net, while the Laker's goaltender stood tall over the first period and throughout the game's action.

Masotta finally got her team on the board in the second period thanks to a fantastic pass from Wall, who put the puck right at the feet of Masotta for a wide-open goal on the goalie's glove side.

Despite what could have been a big swing of momentum for Plattsburgh, the team was unable to capitalize, as they were outshot in the second period 9-7 by Oswego.
In the third period, the team was able to rattle off 14 shots as opposed to the Laker's five on goal, but Lexi Levy of Oswego stood tall, only succumbing to a late goal at the 19:35 mark from Boric with the Cards using an extra skater. The ensuing faceoff was won by the Lakers, allowing Oswego to burn the clock and pull off the league win.

Levy made 34 saves in net to earn the win while Sarah Muller, Ashlyn McGrath, and Mack Hull each scored goals for Oswego State.
