No. 4 Women's Ice Hockey Wins Fifth Straight with 5-0 Victory Over Buffalo State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 4 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team continued their excellent play as of late, extending their winning streak to five games with a 5-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over Buffalo State. The team saw a strong attack throughout the entire game, putting 66 shots on goal over 60 minutes of action.

The Plattsburgh State Cardinals are currently the No. 4 team in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 rankings.

The Cardinals utilized a balanced offensive attack on Saturday afternoon, as each skater registered a shot on goal over the game's action. Emma McLean (Burlington, Mass/Pomfret School) tallied the game's first goal for the game-winning score while Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues), Mae Olshansky (Wilmette, Ill./North American Hockey Academy), Emily Kasprzak (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite), and Taya Balfour (Moorestown, N.J./Philadelphia Little Flyers) each scored for Plattsburgh State. Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), Bridget Orr (Excelsior, Minn./North American Hockey Academy), and Zsofia Pazmandi (Kaposvar, Hungary/Ontario Hockey Academy) each had two assists for the Cards as seven total players tallied helpers on the day. Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks) took home the win in net, as she stopped all 13 shots that came her way for her career-high fifth shutout of the year.

The special teams play of Plattsburgh State was very strong on Saturday, as they killed three penalties while going 2-5 on the advantage themselves, all while outshooting Buffalo State 66-13.

Plattsburgh improves to 14-2-1 (11-1 SUNYAC) and next welcomes No. 6 Middlebury to Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. The Bengals fall to 1-15-1 (0-11-0 SUNYAC) and will host SUNY Potsdam for two games next weekend, on Jan. 26 and 27.

The Cardinals had a relentless attack throughout all periods, as evidenced by their 66 shots on goal, which were 22, 25, and 19 in each period. It took Plattsburgh nearly the entire first period and their second power play to get on the board, as McLean tallied the eventual game-winner knocking in a loose puck of a saved shot inside the crease.

With just a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, Plattsburgh made sure to extend that advantage in the second stanza, scoring four goals to pull away for the win. Once again working on the power play, Plattsburgh was able to score as Norton tallied her fifth goal of the season and fourth in her last five games with a slapshot from just outside the top of the slot at the 9:50 mark of the period. Less than a minute later, Kasprzak followed with her third goal of the year, as Boric found the first-year skating down the slot for an easy score with the goalie out of position.

At the 13:52 mark, Olshanksy added on with her third goal of the season, while Balfour capped off the game's scoring with her second goal of the year with less than five minutes to go in the period.
With the 5-0 lead entering the third period, Plattsburgh State kept up the pressure with 19 shots on goal, but were unable to score, as they settled for the 5-0 win.

Chelsea Kingston made a career-high 61 saves for Buffalo State, as she took the loss in goal.
