Lewis Posts First Career Shutout as No. 4 Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Buffalo State 7-0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In just her fifth career start, first-year goaltender Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass/Northwood School) led the No. 4 Plattsburgh State Cardinals to a shutout win, as they defeated Buffalo State 7-0 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. Lewis posted 30 saves, stopping each shot that came her way in just under 60 minutes of action.

Plattsburgh State is currently ranked No. 4 in the USCHO.com Division III Top-15 Poll.

The Cardinals matched their season high in goals with seven scores, as they had five different skaters register goals. Julia Masotta (Tewksbury, Mass/Norwich) and Zsofia Pazmandi (Kaposvar, Hungary/Ontario Hockey) each had two scores, with Masotta adding an assist for a team-high three points. Molly Riggi (Farmingdale, N.J./New Jersey Titans) notched her first career goal, while Ella Fesette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./RIT) picked up her first goal in a Cardinal uniform. Ciara Wall (Somerville, Mass/New Hampshire) tallied a goal and assist for the Cards in the win, while Kendall Wasik (Novi, Mich./HoneyBaked), Ivy Boric (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), and Maeghan Forsyth (Billings, Mont./Notre Dame Hounds) each had two assists for multi-point nights.

With just four total penalties, power plays were scarce, but the Cardinals took advantage of their second advantage opportunity, going 1-3 on the power play while killing Buffalo State's only opportunity. Overall, Plattsburgh outshot the Bengals 47-30 over the 60-minute affair.

With the win, the Cards improve to 13-2-1 (10-1 SUNYAC) while the Bengals fall to 1-14-1 (0-10-1). The two teams meet again tomorrow, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. in the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena for their final game of the season against each other.

Despite the game's final score, Plattsburgh took the majority of the second period to find the back of the net, as they used their second power play opportunity to break the scoreless tie. Masotta tallied the goal as she deflected a Mattie Norton (Glen Carbon, Ill./St. Louis Lady Blues) slapshot in the slot for the lead the Cards would not relinquish.

The 1-0 score held for over 10 minutes, bleeding into the second period, until Pazmandi added another Cardinal score skating from the neutral zone to slot, where she scored working around multiple defenders through the five-hole. She followed soon after, notching her second goal of the game for her fourth career two-goal game.

The Plattsburgh State offense continued to play well in the third period, exploding for four goals in the final 20 minutes of play. Wall started the third period almost immediately, scoring 25 seconds into the third stanza as she skated through three Bengal defenders and finished bar-down just outside of the crease. The team added on at the 7:31 mark of action as Riggi found a loose puck in the crease off a saved Wasik shot, tapping in the missed attempt for the 5-0 Cardinal lead.

The firsts for Plattsburgh continued as Fesette picked up her first goal as a Cardinal less than four minutes after RIggi, as her long shot from the point snuck through the five-hole to extend the Cards' lead to 6-0. Masotta capped off the night as she tallied her second goal of the game with a shot from the slot, beating the goalie stick side for the score.

Jessica Auge made 40 saves in goal for the Bengals as she took the loss with 60 minutes of action.
