PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team settled for a tie against Oswego State on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), despite dominating possession throughout the game's 90 minutes. Plattsburgh held a 19-5 shot advantage and a 9-1 corner advantage over the game's entirety but could not produce the opportunities into more goals.
John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) scored his fifth goal of the season in the 74
th minute, tying the game less than 30 seconds after Oswego scored to take the lead.
Connor Howe (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) picked up the assist for his first collegiate point, eventually helping to lead to the tie.
Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) earned the tie in net, moving his season record to 5-0-4 as he also made two saves.
Plattsburgh now sits a 5-0-4 (1-0-3 SUNYAC) and will next play SUNY Morrisville in non-conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. Oswego State moves to 2-3-4 (1-1-1 SUNYAC) on the season and next play Fredonia at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
At the outset of the game's action, it was clear that the Cardinals would control every aspect of the game, and their ability to finish opportunities would be the deciding factor in the result. Through the first 20 minutes, Plattsburgh put three shots on goal, but all were saved by the Oswego keeper. The half came to a close with the Cards leading in both shots and corners but were without a goal to show for it.
In the second half, it was more of what occurred in the first period, as Oswego was content to pack the defensive end with bodies and make the Cardinals work for a score. Finally, the Lakers broke through with a goal as a two-on-one developed in the 74
th minute, leading to an Ethan Caruana score.
Plattsburgh answered brilliantly however, as right off the restart, Hayes controlled possession of the ball through the offensive end passing to Howe at the top of the box. The first-year forward played the ball back to Hayes, who scored with a kick from his left foot into the back of the net, tying the game. With that goal, he extended his team lead in both goals (5) and points (11).
Over the final 15 minutes, both teams played desperately as each tried to pick up valuable points in the league standings. Both teams were able to get a shot on goal over the waning minutes, but both keepers made saves to lock in the tie.
Andre Bourjolly made six saves to earn a tie-in goal while Kyle Gehnrich picked up the assist for the Lakers.
