Perry's First Career Goal Leads Men's Soccer to Road Win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team defeated the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs on Wednesday evening, 1-0, as the team took home a non-conference win over in central New York. Danny Perry (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) notched his first career goal for the difference maker in the Plattsburgh win, as the sophomore midfielder helped keep Plattsburgh unbeaten in 2023.

Perry scored the game's lone goal in the 50th minute, with the assist coming from John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River). Marcial Vasquez (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) picked up the win in goal in his first start of the season, with two shutouts now under his belt in three career games. Overall, his record in his career is without a loss to blemish it, at 2-0-1.

Plattsburgh State moves to 6-0-4 with the win and matches their longest unbeaten streak to begin a season since 2012 when the team started 10-0 to begin the year. They next head to Fredonia in road action, playing the Blue Devils on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. Morrisville moves to 3-7-2 on the season and will next play Husson University in conference play on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Game action started pretty slow on both sides with only seven total shots over the first 45 minutes of action, as the Cards took four and Morrisville took three. Hayes put the only shot on goal for the Cardinals in the half in the waning moments of the 44th minute, but the Mustangs' keeper was able to make the save to keep the game scoreless.

In the second half, Plattsburgh was very aggressive from the start, keeping the ball on their side with two corner kicks in the first five minutes of the half's action. Finally, the team was able to break through with a score, as Hayes found Perry on a run near the right edge of the box, where the sophomore midfielder was able to beat his defender and the keeper to the ball, kicking off the opposing goalie into the net for the score.

Plattsburgh continued to control the game in the second half, as they dominated possession and did not allow Morrisville to attempt a shot, outshooting the Mustangs 7-0 in the second stanza. The Cardinals were able to pick up several chances to extend their lead, with Frankie Palumbo (Walkill, N.Y./Walkill) had his shot saved in the 57th minute, Xavier Kamba (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) had a shot hit in the woodwork in the 63rd minute, and Tristan Laundree (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) also had a shot saved in the 67th minute.

Ultimately, the Plattsburgh defensive line played excellently to help give Vasquez the clean sheet in goal as Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Jack Healy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River), Christian Garner (Port St. Lucie, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury), and Matthew Pitarresi (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) were each excellent on the defensive end for the 90 minutes of action.

Caleb Lucero took the loss in goal playing all 90 minutes and making three saves, while Johnathan Hernandez and Javier Duarte each took shots on goal for the Mustangs.
