Healy's Goal Leads to Tie with New Paltz in SUNYAC Contest

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team earned a tie on the road Wednesday evening against SUNY New Paltz in road conference action, tying the Hawks 1-1. With the tie, the Cards earned another valuable point in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings and now have their longest unbeaten streak to begin a season since 2012 when they started 10-0.

Jack Healy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) was the team's lone goal scorer, tying the game in the 16th minute. Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) continues to avoid losses, moving his record to 5-0-3 on the year in goal, as the junior stopper made two saves in net. John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) led the team with four shots and two on goal, as Plattsburgh outshot New Paltz 9-7, and earned eight corners to the Hawks' one. Hayes also picked up an assist on Healy's goal.

Plattsburgh moves to 5-0-3 (1-0-2) with Wednesday's result and now looks toward a home matchup with Oswego State on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.  New Paltz moves to 6-1-2 (1-1-1 SUNYAC) as they next play Geneseo at home on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The game's action was quick to start, as the Hawks were able to get a shot off in the fourth minute and Philip Varner scored a minute later to give New Paltz an early 1-0 lead.

The Cards were able to respond in a relatively quick fashion, as they earned a corner just before the 16th minute.  Off a set piece, Hayes was freed up on the back side of the goal and put a great header attempt on the net that was saved by the Hawks' keeper. Off of the rebound, Healy was the first to the ball and put the shot in to tie the game up at one goal apiece. The score was Healy's third of the season, a new career-high for the senior defender.

Shots were few and far between for the remainder of the half, as the teams went into the break tied up at one score apiece.

The second half began as the first half ended, with neither team creating a lot of opportunities with shots on the goal. Over the final five minutes, however, Plattsburgh ramped up the aggressiveness and earned four corner kicks. In the final minute of the game, the corner resulted in another great look at goal for Hayes, but his header was turned away by a diving New Paltz goalie, preserving the tie.

Christian Micheli earned the tie-in goal for the Hawks, making four saves over 90 minutes. Varner had the team's lone goal in 80 minutes of work, as he and Joseph DiPreta led the team with two shots apiece.
