PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team played their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) at home on Saturday, playing to a 0-0 tie with the Brockport Golden Eagles.
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) had an excellent showing in goal, making six saves for her third shutout of the year.
Plattsburgh struggled to find their offensive rhythm on the day, as they were only able to attempt four shots and put one on goal. Despite the shot discrepancy, the team was able to generate chances late, playing well offensively towards the end of the second half. Defensively, the team leaned on their senior core of defenders, as they helped push the 17 shots of Brockport to Haley, or off target. Haley's record moved to 2-2-3 with the tie on Saturday.
The Cardinals move to 2-2-3 (0-0-2 SUNYAC) as they pick up another point in the conference standings. They next play New Paltz on Wednesday, Sept. 27 as they host the Hawks at 4 p.m. Brockport moves to 7-1-1 (1-0-1 SUNYAC) as they tie for the first time this season. They will next play on Monday, Sept. 25 against Hilbert.
The game stalled for a bit at the start, as the teams each were struggling to play the ball through their offense and into their attack. Plattsburgh earned their best chance of the game in the 7
th minute to pick up the contest's action, as
Allison Brown (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) played a ball to
Nora Fitzgerald (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) in the center of the box, where her shot was saved by Brockport's goalkeeper.
Throughout the course of the game, the Plattsburgh defense held strong in several situations, not allowing any easy chances for the Golden Eagles even when they were able to work the ball into advantageous situations on their offensive end.
At halftime, Brockport held the advantage in shots and corners, 7-2 and 3-1 respectively, advantages they would hold through full time, winning the shot battle 17-4 and earning more corners 8-3.
At the outset of the second half, the Golden Eagles had several opportunities offensively, taking six shots in the first 15 minutes of action. Haley made three saves in that span, keeping Plattsburgh in contention. Towards the end of the second half, with the game still tied, the Cardinals finally began generating some opportunities in and around the net but were unable to take a good shot. The final bit of game action came in the 88
th minute when Brockport earned a corner kick, but once again the combination of Haley and their veteran defense was able to withstand the attack.
For Brockport, Madeline McCrosson picked up the tie and made one save, and Amelia Breton led the team with five shots and two looks on goal.
