PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team fell 2-0 on Wednesday evening in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action to SUNY New Paltz.
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) gave an excellent effort in goal, matching her career-high in saves with nine stops.
Haley faced 22 shots on the afternoon, stopping nine of the Hawks' attempts to keep Plattsburgh in the game for the vast majority of the game's 90 minutes.
Ella Santomassimo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) led the team with five shots taken, as she attempted three on goal in 79 minutes of action on the field.
Plattsburgh falls to 2-3-3 (0-1-2 SUNYAC) with the loss and now will head out on the road for a SUNYAC Tournament first-round rematch with Oswego State on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. New Paltz improves to 6-3-1 (2-0 SUNYAC) and has a big road matchup with Geneseo on Saturday, Sept. 30 next on their schedule.
New Paltz came out firing, showing an aggressive offensive attack early on with four shots in the first 11 minutes, as Haley made two early saves. Plattsburgh had a good look in the 19
th minute, with a stray ball finding the feet of
Nora Fitzgerald (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), but a shot from the senior attacker went high. Santomassimo put two shots on goal over the following 10 minutes, as Plattsburgh had a good stretch of chances but could not convert.
The good string of looks for the Cards was followed by a barrage of shots for New Paltz, as they had seven shots from the 33
rd minute on to the end of the half, culminating in the first score of the game from Kelly Licata, assisted by Paris Burke to put the Hawks up 1-0 just before the break.
The second half was a hard-fought battle from both sides, as New Paltz looked to seal the game and Plattsburgh searched for the equalizer. The Hawks continued to find looks at the goal, but Haley and Plattsburgh's defense stood tall. In the 84
th minute, the Cards had two great looks at the goal as the New Paltz goalie came out to intercept a pass, leaving the net unprotected. However, the first shot was blocked, and the Hawks then made an excellent team save on a Santomassimo attempt to keep the lead.
A few moments later, in the 87
th minute, a loose ball saw Haley come out to try and punch the ball away, but in a collision, she was taken out as Rachel Eisert found the back of the net to seal the game for New Paltz.
For the Hawks, Maddie Franklin posted the shutout with two saves.
