BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team secured an important point on the road Saturday against Brockport, earning a tie with last year's runner-up in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament, by a score of 0-0. With the tie, the team stays unbeaten on the season, the longest streak of games to begin a year without a loss since starting 7-0 in 2016.
Teddy Healy (Amityville, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) earned his fourth shutout of the year in goal, stopping four shots to move to 5-0-2 on the season. Overall, the team put seven shots on goal, compared to Brockport's four.
Modou Badjie (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) led the team in shot attempts over 82 minutes of action, putting up three shots with two being on goal.
The Cardinals move to 5-0-2 (1-0-1 SUNYAC) and now look to a matchup with New Paltz on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. Plattsburgh defeated the Hawks 3-2 in the SUNYAC Tournament first round last year as the sixth seed, after losing to New Paltz at home in the regular season. The Golden Eagles move to 3-2-3 (1-0-1 SUNYAC) with a contest against Oswego State on Wednesday, Sept. 27, next on the docket.
Plattsburgh looked to be in the same offensive rhythm they had against Potsdam early in the game action against Brockport, as
John Hayes (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) had a good look on goal saved in the 11
th minute and Badjie had a shot saved in the 13
th minute. Those would be the only shots on goal for the Cardinals in the first half, as they were forced to go on the defensive in the majority of the first 45 minutes.
Brockport had several opportunities in a seven-minute span turned away by the Plattsburgh defense, as they attempted four shots between the 15
th and 22
nd minutes, two of which were saved by Healy and one which was blocked.
Heading into the second half, the Cardinals were very aggressive, putting four shots up in the first 15 minutes and three on goal.
Brian Coughlan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) had an attempt saved in the 55
th minute and
Connor Howe (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) and
Jake McGowan (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) each had shots saved in the 57
th and 60
th minutes, respectively.
Badjie gave the Cards an excellent look at a goal in the final minutes of the game, putting a shot on net in the 78
th minute that was saved by the Golden Eagles' keeper. In the waning moments of action, Plattsburgh withstood two excellent opportunities with a shot going wide let in the 88
th minute and Healy making a save with just two seconds left in the game action in a scrum in front of the net.
Andrew Taylor earned the tie for Brockport making seven saves, while Evan Steely and Chuck Domm each put up three shots and one on goal each.
