POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team opened State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Wednesday evening, as they tied the SUNY Potsdam Bears 0-0 in full time.
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) registered her second shutout of the season for Plattsburgh, making two saves in goal.
The Cardinals struggled to put shots up early, taking just two shots in the first half, but eventually found their aggressive offensive attack in the second period, attempting 10 shots.
Nora Fitzgerald (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and
Zoe Rice (Leicester, Mass./Leicester) led the team in shot attempts with three each, while Rice put two on goal. Haley's record moves to 2-2-2 while Potsdam keeper Savannah Bowie moves to 2-2-1 on her season after she made three saves to also earn her second shutout of the season.
Plattsburgh State moves to 2-2-2 (0-0-1 SUNYAC) with SUNY Brockport next on the schedule, as they welcome the Golden Eagles to Plattsburgh on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. Potsdam moves to 2-3-1 (0-1-1 SUNYAC) and will match up with Oswego next, as they take on the Lakers at home on Saturday, Sept. 23.
The beginning of the game and the entire first half proved to be a chess match, as each team looked to get into an offensive rhythm and gain the advantage of pace and possession. Rice put the first shot of the game on the Bear's goalie, during the second minute, but it was saved. Fitzgerald attempted the only other shot of the first half for Plattsburgh in the 26
th minute, but the shot went off target, missing right.
At the half, Potsdam only had four shots, compared to Plattsburgh's two, but were able to put two on goal, which were both saved by Haley. Those two attempts on the net were their only attempts of the game, as they were only able to attempt two more shots over the final 45 minutes, as Plattsburgh settled in on the defensive end.
The second half looked more like the Plattsburgh team that was averaging over two goals a game heading into Wednesday's matchup, with some aggressive offensive play as they looked to take the lead. Of the ten looks they were able to get in the second half, two were on goal, as they were able to test Potsdam's defense. However, the Bears were up to the task, turning away their two looks on goal, and creating tough attempts for Plattsburgh elsewhere.
In the 84
th and 85
th minute, the Cards combined to take three shots in what would be their last chance to score in their opening conference game, but none found the net or were on target. The team also procured a corner kick in the 86
th minute but could not get a shot attempt from that chance either.
For Potsdam, Julia Tycott was the lone Bear to attempt multiple shots, putting two up in 74 minutes of action.
