OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team picked up their first win in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday, defeating Oswego State 6-3.
Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) continued her excellent play in singles, clinching the win, and
Nicole Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) won her first No.1 singles match in her career.
The Cardinals move to 4-2 (1-2 SUNYAC) with the win and will travel to St. Michael's for their next game, on Friday, Sept. 22. The following game on Saturday, Sept. 23 against Farmingdale will be the team's senior day. Oswego State falls to 2-4 and will play Utica University on Wednesday, Sept. 20 on the road.
Plattsburgh got off to a good start on Saturday, as they won both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches after falling in No. 1 Doubles, taking a 2-1 advantage over the Lakers in singles play.
Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and Mitchell clinched the first win of the day for Plattsburgh with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles, while
Sarah Benowitz (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) and
Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantown, N.Y./Beekmantown) won 8-6 in No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, the Lakers earned a win to start things off, but Carey picked up the victory at No. 4 singles to put Plattsburgh back in the driver's seat up 3-2, with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Benowitz was the victor in No. 2 singles, winning 7-5, 6-1, and after an Oswego win at No. 5 singles, the match-clinching victory came from Mitchell at No. 6 singles, who won in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In the final match of the day, Svantner was triumphant, winning in three sets at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1.
Mitchell is now 5-0 in singles play, as she has yet to lose a match in singles play in her collegiate career.
