ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team dropped a 17-9 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest to SUNY Oneonta on Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Field.
The Red Dragons finished with a 52-39 cushion in shots and a 26-23 edge in ground balls while going 19-for-30 on face-offs and 22-for-22 on clears. The Cardinals went 2-for-7 on extra-man opportunities while clearing the ball at an 18-for-19 clip.
Plattsburgh State falls to 2-10 overall (0-4 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits SUNY Brockport in its final road game of the regular season on Saturday, April 22, at 12 p.m. Oneonta rises to 7-3 overall (3-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts Hamilton College on Tuesday, April 18, at 7 p.m.
Oneonta hopped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 5:19 of play before sophomore midfielder
Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) put the Cardinals on the board with an unassisted goal midway through the opening stanza. After Oneonta's sophomore defenseman Matthew Mangels scored, Woods found the back of the cage again before the Red Dragons scored twice more to lead, 6-2, through 15 minutes of play.
The Red Dragons opened up a 9-2 lead on the strength of three goals, two of which were man-down, before junior midfielder
Anthony Faber (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) connected with senior midfielder
Michael Swift (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) for a goal with 5:10 left in the second and senior midfielder
Owen Lorenzetti (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse Academy) scored man-up with 2:34 remaining. Oneonta scored with 18 seconds left in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 10-4 advantage.
While Oneonta scored the first two goals of the third quarter, junior attackman
John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) found twine with a shot midway through the stanza. The Red Dragons countered with a goal from sophomore midfielder Steve Barkiyan before senior midfielder
Gustav Rugg (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) fired in a man-up strike on a feed from sophomore attackman
Mike Walsh (Westchester, N.Y./Lakeland). Oneonta's first-year attackman Jamie O'Neil scored with 1:39 left in the third quarter to push the home team's edge to 14-6 heading into the final regulation frame.
The fourth quarter wound up being evenly played, with Oneonta's junior defenseman Jesse AlfanoStJohn kicking off scoring in the frame 21 seconds in on an assist from Barkiyan. Sophomore midfielder
Logan Vilardi (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) scored unassisted 1:05 later before the Red Dragons countered with a goal from senior midfielder Sam Haita 36 seconds after Vilardi's marker. Walsh found Eiseman for a goal before Oneonta extended the lead to 17-8. Lorenzetti ripped a shot into the back of the net off a feed from Rugg with 1:02 left to round out scoring in the contest.

For Oneonta, O'Neil led the way with seven points on five goals and two assists, while junior face-off specialist Stephen Sommo went 10-for-14 at the 'X' with five ground balls.
