ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In two heartbreaking games, the Plattsburgh State baseball team sustained two State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) losses to SUNY Brockport, as the Golden Eagles earned two walk-off wins over the Cardinals. In game one, the Cardinals came back to tie the game in the ninth and take a lead in extras before falling in the eleventh, and in game two, a ninth-inning lead was short-lived, as the Golden Eagles won in the bottom of the frame.
Chris Santic (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) was excellent in his start in game two, going eight strong while giving up just two runs and striking out seven batters.
Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) and
Nick Cergol (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) each finished the day with three hits, with Cremin totaling three extra base-hits and Cergol reaching base five total times on the day.
The Cardinals fall to 4-12 (0-5 SUNYAC) and have lost four one-run games in their last five outings. The team will look to avoid a series sweep with a win tomorrow against Brockport, as the teams will meet in the series finale at 11 a.m. Brockport improves to 13 -6 (5-0 SUNYAC) and will look for their 10
th straight win and their second SUNYAC sweep of the year.
Game One: Brockport 6, Plattsburgh 5 (11 innings)
The Plattsburgh State baseball team played an incredible back-and-forth game to open up their SUNYAC series with SUNY Brockport as the Golden Eagles needed 11 innings to take down the Cards. Plattsburgh came back in the top of the ninth with two outs to tie the game and took a lead in the tenth before falling in eleven innings.
The game began in a much more relaxed fashion than the later innings, as only four total runs crossed the plate through the first eight and a half frames. Plattsburgh starter
Kolby Mordecki (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and Adam Douglas had strong starts, with Moredecki going 5.1 innings while giving up three earned runs and striking out one. Douglas lasted 8.1 innings, giving up just five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.
Justin Osborn (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) was strong in relief, giving the Cards 2.2 scoreless innings of work, allowing just two hits and striking out one.
Offensively, Cergol,
Christian Ott (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), and
Adam Wein (North Rockland, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) each had two hits, with Cergol scoring two runs, Ott driving in a run and Wein scoring once. Cremin and
Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) each drove in two runs with clutch hits for Plattsburgh.
Brockport opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead, but Plattsburgh responded immediately, tying the game with a two-out RBI single from Ott. Brockport would later take a two-run lead to knock out the Cardinal starter, with a two-run sixth inning to go up 3-1.
After a quiet seventh and eighth inning, a one-out walk in the top of the ninth from Cergol knocked out Douglas from the game to start the Plattsburgh rally. After the second out of the inning, Ott kept the game alive with a single to right and Veit then came through with a huge double to right, plating both Cergol and Ott, tying the game up at two runs apiece. In the bottom of the ninth,
Logan Avin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Waterford (Conn.)) entered with the bases loaded and just one out and proceeded to strike out the first batter he faced and induced an inning-ending flyout.
In the top of the tenth, with two outs and a runner on, Cremin put a ball over the Brockport fence to give Plattsburgh a 5-3 lead late in the game's action. Despite the momentum being against them, Brockport was able to put the first three batters of the bottom of the tenth on base, scoring a run on a wild pitch, and then tying the game with a sacrifice fly to left. With the game-winning run on second base, Avin was able to keep the game going, inducing an inning-ending groundout.
After a 1-2-3 top of the eleventh for Plattsburgh, a leadoff infield hit, a sac bunt, and an intentional walk had two runners on for the Golden Eagles and just one out. A misplay in the infield on the next batter set up a bases-loaded opportunity, with Brockport putting the next ball in play to second base, where the Cardinals failed to turn an inning-ending double play, giving the Golden Eagles a walk-off fielder's choice and a 6-5 win.
Avin was charged with the loss for his 2.1 innings of work and Anthony Lapine earned the win for Brockport retiring all three batters he faced in the top of the eleventh.
Game Two: Brockport 2, Plattsburgh 1
The Plattsburgh State baseball team fell in another one-run game in their second contest of the day, despite a terrific appearance from junior southpaw Santic. The left-hander was outstanding on the mound, logging eight scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the bottom of the ninth. He tied his career-high of seven strikeouts that he set last march versus Minnesota Morris, and set a new career-high with eight innings of work.
Cremin finished the second game 2-4 with a run scored, a double, a triple and a walk, while Cergol, Veit, and Wein each reached base twice for the Cards.
Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) registered the only RBI for Plattsburgh with an RBI single in the ninth.
After finding big hits at the end of game one, the Cardinals failed to cash in on several opportunities in game two. Despite drawing six walks and collecting six hits, the Cards managed just one run, leaving 12 runners on base. Plattsburgh had multiple runners on base in five innings but were unable to get the big hit that they were able to come up with in the first game on Friday afternoon.
As the Card's offense stalled, Santic was dealing, as he allowed just seven baserunners and one extra-base hit through his first eight innings of work. He had retired eight batters in a row before the ninth inning, as he seemingly was more effective as the game went on.
In the ninth inning, Plattsburgh had two out and no one on base when Cremin tripled to left to put the go-ahead run just 90 feet away. Gonzalski was up next and was able to beat out a groundball to the shortstop area, bringing home Cremin and giving the Cards the lead. However, in the bottom of the ninth, a leadoff triple and passed ball tied the game for the Golden Eagles and a Brian Tietjen home run then walked it off for Brockport for a 2-1 win.
Santic was charged with the loss for his efforts on the mound while Nick Ianniello earned the complete game win.
