Baseball Falls in Series Finale Against Brockport

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team fell in the series finale to Brockport early on Saturday morning, as the Golden Eagles took the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series sweep over the Cardinals.

The Cardinals finished with one hit in the early morning action, as Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) had a single while two other batters reached on errors, with Plattsburgh only able to get three baserunners on the day. Plattsburgh starter Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) was solid in six innings, giving up five runs and striking out seven Brockport batters. For Brockport, the story was their graduate senior arm Matthew Colucci, as the right-hander went the distance for a complete game, one-hit shutout over the Cards, as he struck out 14 batters.

In relief, Ryan Nista (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) allowed three hits and held the Golden Eagles scoreless, while Justin Osborn (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) allowed two hits in .2 scoreless innings of work.

Plattsburgh State falls to 4-13 (0-6 SUNYAC) on the season and next takes on Clarkson in Potsdam on April 5 at 3 p.m., before the team plays their first home game of the year on April 7. The Golden Eagles of Brockport rise to 14-6 (6-0 SUNYAC) as they have won 10 straight, and will head to St. John Fisher for a non-conference test on April 4.

Despite the offensive struggles in this one, Plattsburgh was in contention for most of the game, as the score was just 2-0 Brockport heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Golden Eagles stuck first with back-to-back two-out doubles in the first for a run and scored another in the fifth on an RBI single. Brockport finally separated and took a five-run lead on three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh, knocking Veit from the game. Osborn came on to get two outs before Nista escaped the inning by inducing a popout.

Veit was charged with his second loss of the season while Colucci earned his second win of the year on the bump for Brockport. Jason Mansell was 3-3 for the Golden Eagles with two RBI and Zach Eldred had two hits, two RBI, and a double.
