Hot Bats Lead Softball to Two-Win Day in South Carolina

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The Plattsburgh State softball team picked up two wins on Wednesday in South Carolina at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, defeating McDaniel 4-2, before enacting a run-rule in the fifth inning in a win against Maine-Farmington, 16-3.

On the day, Kristina Maggiacomo (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) was 4-6 with three runs scored and three RBI, while also pitching a complete game in the game-one win. Plattsburgh once again had great offensive efforts, totaling 28 hits on the day as they were able to get to the Green Terror and Beaver pitching.

Game One: Plattsburgh State 4, McDaniel 2

The Plattsburgh State softball team took home an early afternoon win against the McDaniel Green Terror, winning 4-2 behind excellent pitching from Maggiacomo and great hitting from Maggiacomo and Rebecca Diller (Halfmoon, N.Y./Shenendehowa).

Diller finished the day at 3-3, driving two runs and adding a double for the Cardinal offense. Maggiacomo was great on both sides of the ball, scoring two runs and recording two hits while earning the complete game win by throwing seven strong innings and striking out six. First-year Gwen Noll (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) earned her first career start in right field and made it count, as she put together a two-hit effort, scoring one run and picking up a double.

With the win over McDaniel, Plattsburgh moved to 2-1 on the season, while McDaniel moved to 3-6 on the young 2023 season.

Plattsburgh was the first team to strike, as they lead throughout the entirety of this game, scoring one run in the first as Diller singled home Maggiacomo. The score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning, when Diller once again scored Maggiacomo, this time with a double to left field to give the Cards a two-run cushion.

The Cardinals added two huge insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Noll doubled with a runner on to put two Plattsburgh runners in scoring position with just one out. Claire Palmer (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) then grounded to short, easily bringing home a run from third, but an errant throw by the first baseman trying to catch Noll at third base allowed her to score and put Plattsburgh up 4-0.

The Green Terror, who were scoreless against Maggiacomo through six innings, finally got to the right-hander with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, as a walk and a double scored a run, and a single soon after scored another. With the tying run at the plate and two outs for McDaniel, Maggiacomo was able to induce a game-ending flyout to earn her first win of the season.

McDaniel starter Morgan Rogers was tagged with her first loss in a complete game effort as Collen Camburn drove in a run and doubled twice for the Green Terror.

Game Two: Plattsburgh State 16, Maine-Farmington 3 (5 innings)

The Cardinal offense exploded in game two on Wednesday, scoring 16 runs, highlighted by an 11-run fourth inning that helped the team run-rule Maine-Farmington. The 16 runs and 19 hits were the most by the team since they scored 16 runs and had 19 hits against UW-Superior in 2019.

Kylie Persampire (Bellmore, N.Y./Wellington C. Mepham) picked up her first two hits of her collegiate career, tripling in the fourth and fifth innings and driving in two runs. The two triples tied the program record for triples in a game, as she became the sixth Cardinal and the first since Danielle Gjergji in 2008 to triple twice in one game. Palmer and Golino each produced three-hit efforts, as Palmer scored three runs and Golino added two runs and an RBI. Golino picked up her first win of the year in the circle with four innings of work, striking out three batters as well.

With the win, Plattsburgh now stands at 3-1 at the end of Wednesday's action and will wrap up their South Carolina trip with two games tomorrow, March 16, playing FDU-Florham at 3 p.m. and Lycoming College at 5 p.m. Maine-Farmington moved to 0-5 with the loss and play Keene State to wrap up the day on March 15.

The Cardinals started the scoring in this one right away in the top of the first, with Golino singling home Palmer and Maggiacomo following with an RBI single to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. After the Beavers were able to get a run back in the bottom of the frame, Kristen Langdon (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) drove in a run to the Cards up 3-1. Another run from Maine-Farmington in the third made the score 3-2 heading into the top of the fourth inning.

The 11-run fourth inning was eventful for Plattsburgh, as 10 hits were recorded, and the team batted around nearly two full times. Maggiacomo started the run-scoring party with a two-run single to left. Michelle Gonzales (Grass Valley, Calif./Nevada Union) followed shortly after with a two-run single to left before Persampire tripled two batters later to drive in two runs, bringing the score to 10-2 at that point. Runs continued to cross in the inning as Megan Pillus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.Spackenkill) picked up her first career hit with one of many run-scoring hits in the inning, singling to left. At the end of the inning, Plattsburgh led 14-2 and wasn't done yet.

With one out, Persampire tripled for the second time in the game and after a strike out, Dimitra Mouhteros (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) tripled to bring home Persampire. Mouhteros came around to score on an error on the next play to give Plattsburgh 16 runs.

Morgan Omerord (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) came in for the top of the fifth inning and finished the game for Plattsburgh to seal the 16-3 win.
