Women's Tennis Falls in Close Match to Fredonia to Conclude SUNYAC Play

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's tennis team fell to Fredonia in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) finale on Saturday morning. The team has one final game remaining on their 2023-24 schedule as they will wrap up their 2023 season next week.

The Cardinals fall to 8-6 (2-5 SUNYAC) with the loss and are officially eliminated from SUNYAC Tournament contention. They will wrap up their season on Wednesday, Oct. 11 when they host Division II Saint Michael's, whom they narrowly defeated 4-3 back on Sept. 22. Fredonia moves to 2-9 (1-6 SUNYAC) and will wrap up the season taking on Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, Oct. 11.

The Cardinals jumped out to two early wins in doubles play, as they had the advantage heading into the singles matches. Ava Carey (Nanuet, N.Y./ Nanuet) and Jacklin Mitchell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) won the first match at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-4 before the Blue Devils won at No. 1 doubles. Hallie Hurwitz (Beekmantwon, N.Y./Beekmantown) and Jacqueline Svantner (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) picked up a huge win in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, 8-7 (7-3), giving the Cards the 2-1 team advantage going into singles play.

Carey started off the singles matches with a win at No. 4 singles, winning 6-4, 6-1 to put the Cards just two wins away from clinching the win. Consecutive victories from the Blue Devils at No. 3, No. 1, and No. 2 singles put them just one win away from a team win, but Mitchell tied up the wins at four a piece, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. In the deciding match, Hurwitz went to the last set, taking her No. 5 singles opponent to the very end, but fell 3-6, 6-4, 5-7 in an outstanding match that didn't fall the Cardinals way.
