GENESEO, N.Y. –
Avery Durgan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) scored late in the second half to give the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team their first win over the Geneseo Knights since 2015. With the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win, the team clinches the No. 3 seed in the league and will host Geneseo in a rematch of today's game on Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
Durgan scored her fifth goal of the season in the 83
rd minute, giving Plattsburgh the lone goal of the action.
Catrina Maltes (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) picked up the assist on the Durgan goal, her first of the season. In goal,
Lauren Haley (LaGrange, N.Y./Arlington) picked up the win, moving her record to 6-3-5 on the year. Haley made six saves in net, picking up her seventh shutout of the season.
With the win, Plattsburgh improves to 6-4-5 (4-1-4) and will next host SUNY Canton on Tuesday, Oct. 24 for their final regular season game before the SUNYAC Tournament. Geneseo falls to 6-3-7 (2-1-6), suffering their first conference defeat of the season to the Cards. They will next play on Saturday, Oct. 28, in a rematch with Plattsburgh in the conference tournament.
The game began quickly for the Cardinals, as
Zoe Rice (Leicester, Mass./Leicester) put a shot on goal that was saved just over 30 seconds into the action. The next 10 minutes saw little action until the Knights rattled off seven shots in a seven-minute span, with Haley making two saves in that period. Plattsburgh wasn't able to get another shot on goal until the 42
nd minute when
Nora Fitzgerald (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had a shot saved by the Geneseo keeper.
The second half saw even play at the start, with both teams looking to pick up important points in the conference standings. Action remained even between both squads, until the 83
rd minute, as Plattsburgh worked the ball around the top of the 18-yard box. Maltes played a ball to Durgan over on the right side of the 18, where Durgan took a couple of dribbles before ripping a shot from about 20 yards away, finding the back of the net just over the outstretched arm of the Knights goalie.
With just over six minutes of action separating Plattsburgh and a win, the Cards did excellent in going on the defensive, holding Geneseo shotless to secure the win and the top seed.
Mollie Collins took the loss in goal for Geneseo, making three saves in the loss. Liv Raucci led the team in shots and shots on goal, with nine total attempts and three on target.
