Oswego, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State (21-19, 7-11) baseball team saw their season come to an end on Friday morning, following a loss to No. 22 Brockport (32-8, 13-5) 12-3. The team led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Golden Eagles scored 11 unanswered runs to take home the win.
The Cardinals posted their best season since 2012 when they were 22-17 and 9-9 in conference play. During that season, they were eliminated in two games in the SUNYAC tournament as well, losing to Cortland and Oneonta.
Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, NY/Kennedy Catholic) had three hits on the day for Plattsburgh State, while
Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Steve Messerschmitt (Fishkill, NY/Carmel) had two hits apiece. Gonzalski was 2-4 with two runs and a walk on the day, while Messerschmitt drove in two runs.
Christian Lent (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) also had two hits for the Cards, including a run scored and a stolen base.
Plattsburgh got the first run of the game in the top of the first when three of the first four batters of the game reached for the Cardinals, capped by a Messerschmitt RBI single. The Golden Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a bloop single to score a run.
Messerschmitt struck again in the top of the third, scoring Gonzalski with a single to center to give Plattsburgh State the lead. The team added to the lead in the fourth, manufacturing a run with a leadoff single from Lent, a sacrifice to move him to second, a Lent steal of third, and finally, a
Jacob Hutton (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) single to center to score the run.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Golden Eagle offense struck, knocking starter
Sean Malamud (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) out of the game with five hits and four runs. Malamud was the starter of record, moving his season mark to 6-4 overall.
The game remained 5-3 Brockport through two and a half innings before the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the seventh and then pulled away with a five-run fifth.
Kolby Mordecki (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) came in to put out the fire for Plattsburgh State, inducing a groundout to escape the eighth inning.
Tom Kretzler earned the win for Brockport, striking out 11 batters and working around 12 hits from the Plattsburgh offense.
