Oswego, N.Y. – Competing in the SUNYAC Baseball Tournament for the first time in 10 years, the Plattsburgh State baseball team (21-18, 7-11) fell to No.11 Oswego State (29-9, 16-2) 15-2. After Plattsburgh was the first team to get on the board in the top of the first, the Lakers outscored the Cardinals 15-1 the rest of the way to get the tournament win.
Despite the lopsided score, the Cards were able to accumulate 13 hits over nine innings but left 13 men on base.
Steve Messerschmitt (Fishkill, NY/Carmel) and
Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North) each had three hits on the day, with Messerschmitt driving in a run and Gonzalski picking up the only extra-base hit with a double to left.
The Cardinals got on the board in the first inning after
Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) drew a leadoff walk and Gonzalski followed with his double to left field, putting two runners in scoring position. After
Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, NY/Kennedy Catholic) reached on an infield hit, Messerschmitt drove a ball towards the left-field line, easily scoring Kornblau from third.
From then on, the game turned up all Oswego as they scored two runs in the first to take the lead and then five runs in the fifth to take a commanding 7-1 lead early. Plattsburgh added a run in the fifth with an RBI single from
Christian Lent (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) to score Gonzalski.
Oswego then responded with five runs in the sixth to pull away from the Cardinals, adding three more runs in the seventh and eighth.
Lent and
Nick Cergol (Mount Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) each had multi-hit days for Plattsburgh in the loss, with Lent driving in a run.
Ryan Nista (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) tossed a scoreless inning of work and
Christian Diaz (Middletown, NY/Iona Prep) had two strikeouts in an inning of work.
Kaden Kowalowski (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown) threw out three baserunners on the day, helping to limit a strong base running game from Oswego.
Plattsburgh State will play the loser of the Brockport and Cortland game tomorrow at 10 am in Oswego in an elimination game. The winner would move on to play the loser of the following game at 4 pm, while the loser would be sent home.
