Oneonta Scores Nine Unanswered Goals to Defeat Men's Lacrosse

Plattsburgh, N.Y. - After taking a 4-2 lead late in the first period, the Oneonta State Red Dragons (2-8,1-2) scored nine unanswered goals to defeat Plattsburgh State (2-9,0-3) on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The team took a 4-3 lead into the second stanza, but could not score again until just 12 seconds left in regulation as they lost third third game in SUNYAC action.

The first quarter was very closely played, as it looked like the game would be a tight match between the two squads. Stephen Kane (Hampden, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and John Eiseman (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) combined for nearly all of the offense in the first quarter as Kane got the Cardinals on the board off an assist from Eiseman for his 34th goal of the season. Eiseman put in his ninth score of the season not long after as Kane earned the assist, giving Plattsburgh an early 2-0 lead.

After Oneonta's first goal, Kane scored once more at the 6:12 mark in the first period, putting his team back up two goals. The team had a response once more after an Oneonta goal, as Eiseman pickup a goal off of a Zach Gill (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) assist.

From there, however, Oneonta employed a strong zone, locking in defensively and holding the Plattsburgh offense scoreless until the final moments of the game. The momentum seemed to  shift into the hands of the Red Dragons at the end of the first period when what looked to be a Cardinal goal was waved off as the Plattsburgh player was ruled to have stepped in the crease on the shot attempt.

The Cardinals maintained possession throughout the game, evidence by the fact that they out shot Oneonta 43-38, but could not find the back of the net. Meanwhile, the Red Dragons began to find their offensive rhythm, getting some good looks at the net for the rest of the game. Christian Bassi (Windham, New Hampshire/Kimball Union Academy) stopped 13 shots in net, as he did his best to keep Plattsburgh in the game as they struggled offensively.

Michael Swift (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) scored the final goal of the game for the Cardinals with 12 seconds left, as Kane picked up the assist. Justin Rocovich (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) scooped up seven ground balls to lead the team in that category and also had a team-high three caused turnovers.

The team will return to action on Tuesday, April 12 at 4 p.m. when they welcome Russell Sage for their final non-conference game of the season.
