Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) broke the program record in career goals and junior defender/midfielder
Emma McLaughlin (Northport, N.Y./Northport) bettered the program mark in single-season caused turnovers (24), as the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team edged SUNY Potsdam, 16-13, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Wednesday evening at Maxcy Turf Field.
Caoili, who had three goals during the contest, finished the evening with 55 career goals, bettering the former mark of 52 set by
Frankie Porcaro from 2019-21. Caoili is also the program's career record holder in assists (34) and points (89). McLaughlin had three caused turnovers during the game to up her season total to 24, breaking the former program record of 23 set by Claire Wiley in 2019.
Junior midfielder
Caroline Noia (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the Cardinals with six points on four goals and two assists, while Caoili notched five points on three goals and two assists. Sophomore midfielder
Jordan Kowalski (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) netted four goals, while first-year attacker
Maddy Garcia (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) tied the single-game program record in assists with three. McLaughlin helped pace the defense with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.
The Cardinals held a 39-29 edge in shots and a 17-16 cushion in draw controls, while the Bears owned a 29-28 advantage in ground balls. On clears, Plattsburgh State was 17-for-21, while Potsdam was 14-for-29.
Plattsburgh State rises to 4-7 overall (2-4 SUNYAC) with the win and has now matched the 2020 team's single-season program record in wins. The two teams traded goals in the early going of the contest, with Potsdam's junior attacker Anita Reitano tallying on a pass from senior attacker/midfielder Macy Reid to open scoring before Noia scored woman-up midway through the first quarter. The Bears took a 2-1 lead on a goal from graduate student attacker Kyrsten Stone (junior attacker/midfielder Hannah Stevenson assist), while Noia connected with Kowalski to tie the score at 2-all. Following a Potsdam goal from first-year defender/midfielder Tessa Pierce (Stone assist), Plattsburgh State scored three unanswered markers to close out the first quarter. Lindsay Guzzetta (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) buried a feed from Garcia and Caoili cashed in on a dish from Noia to put Plattsburgh State up, 5-3, through 15 minutes of action.
Potsdam received goals from Reitano, Pierce and first-year attacker/midfielder Mallory Marks (Reitano assist) to claim a 6-5 advantage nearly five minutes into the second quarter, while the Cardinals' 5-0 run gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish the remainder of the evening. Kate Kennedy (Waddington, N.Y./Massena) also found the back of the net. The Bears cut the gap to 10-7 heading into the intermission, as Marks converted on a pass from Stevenson with 20 seconds left in the second quarter.
Potsdam's junior midfielder Taylor Swamp scored woman-up on a pass from Reitano 4:55 into the third quarter, while McLaughlin tallied woman-up on a pass from Garcia with 2:25 left in the frame. The Bears received a strike from Stevenson and first-year attacker/midfielder
Caitlin Nash (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) scored (Garcia assist) for the Cardinals to make the score 12-9 in favor of Plattsburgh State heading into the fourth.
Kowalski and Noia each scored in the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter, while Reitano and sophomore midfielder Lindsey LaDue (woman-up) brought Potsdam back within three. Caoili found Guzzetta for a goal midway through the quarter before Swamp (woman-down) and LaDue (woman-up) made it a two-goal game, scoring with 7:04 and 5:26 left, respectively. Kowalski added insurance with 4:28 remaining, using a pass from Caoili.
Reitano led Potsdam offensively with five points, while LaDue and senior defender Calena Rodriguez each scooped up six ground balls.
Junior goalie
Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) earned the win in goal for the Cardinals, making six stops in 38:59 of action. Sophomore goalie Netta Terrance turned aside 12 stops in the loss for the Bears.
